Would've Posted This On Clairvoyant Wank, But It's A Bit Like Shooting Fish In A Barrel.
Oh, Lord.

Laurell K. Hamilton pontificates on Anita Blake vs. Buffy Summers, and the upcoming Anita Blake comics from Marvel.

Crooning "Heeeere, Wank-y, Wank-y, Wank-y..." is a bit redundant at this point, isn't it? I mean, even if it's not Laurell, someone's gonna cause drama. >_>

If this is the wrong place for this, let me know and I'll move it. ^_^

When it comes to the world of prose fiction, Buffy has some serious competition.

Y'know, I've never read a Buffy tie-in novel, but I have read Anita Blake novels (11 of them, to my shame), and somehow I doubt the Buffy tie-ins, however hilariously bad they may be, can achieve that level of typos, broken continuity, pointless fights, and vomit-inducing sex.

I avoid most of the tie-in novels and just stick to tie-in stuff that Joss had a hand in, mainly the comics. Fray, Tales OF The Slayers, Tales Of The Vampires, etc. I'm still working my way through BtVS, so I'm not reading Season 8 yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Anita...I may get the comics, since one is based on the first book, back when she was still interesting and not just a walking excuse for sex scenes. Won't get my hopes TOO high, though.

Or the sheer repetition. She explains everything at least five times over. I think she actually copies and pastes some of the conversations and just changes the name of who Anita is talking to.

I read one tie-in and it was surprisingly good. Didn't screw up continuity, everyone was IC, and clearly aimed at teenage girls, in the good way.

I'm sorry, if you're going to have sex, in a work of fiction, it should be good sex and be between people who care about each other.

... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Sorry. That was... that--

HA!

I couldn't decide if that was the funniest thing, or "Two, Anita started out at 24. She's legal for everything."

BECAUSE THAT'S TOTALLY WHAT IS IMPORTANT ABOUT YOUR FICTIONAL CHARACTER.

Mm, did it ever make it here how two of the blurbs for the latest comic were from people who notably disapproved of the comic? One was actually from a sporking!

And wow, Laurrel really has her head shoved up her ass. It'd be one thing if she realized she could just phone in her novels and still make a boat load (without having to spare any expenses for an editor, either!), but she honestly believes having her main character whore it up with every dick she comes across and practically abuse (most certainly neglect) her main squeeze is better than having a character who is unlucky with sex? At least Buffy was a realistic character, even if her early relationships did smack of "Sex is bad and will turn your boyfriend into an evil, soulless monster!"

. . . Well, at least I'm not spooging in FW.

Wasn't that just Angel, though? I know Buffy had a string of bad relationships, which is entirely possible. Riley was cute, though.

I know, and it's not like every guy she slept with turned into a monster.

Riley was a pretty good guy, all things considered!

Never saw the blurbs, but I'm not surprised. I loved the early books, but even I'd give them mixed reviews if I were to be brutally honest about them.

I love the part where she says that Anita predates Buffy by several years.

Now, no, that's not the "official" Buffy. It's not Sarah Michelle Gellar. But it is Buffy, it is a female vampire slayer, and I'm seeing that it predates her dreck by two years there.

One) Poor LKH. Just admit you love to write PWP and face it. You're no different than Kenyon. You just got a different, snazzy genre title.

Two) The other thing is… in many ways, Anita's world is bigger than Buffy's. There's a wider variety of monsters on a regular basis. I know there are other monsters like werewolves, but they never played that big of a part. I know there were occasionally other monsters aside from vampires, but primarily it was a vampire series.

One should not reference what hasn't seen. I'm just saying. For one thing, I seem to recall Praying Mantis Lady that wanted to eat Xander. Not exactly the most common monster around. Werewolf? Dated the Teen Witch (oh, god, make the crossover stop). I'd say that Oz's deal with the Initiative was a good clue that he played a slightly bigger part. Oh, and him killing Veruca. But hey, what do I know?

Sorry, I skimmed the rest. Once I realized how much she "borrowed" from other writers. Way better ones, even. Actually, that's not too hard. I haven't read a Buffy tie-in, since god, they first came out. ButI'm inspired to find my list I had my friend write up and read them. At least then my brain won't rot.

It's just come back to me! I've been bothered by an eerie feeling about Anita Blake comic-version (which I happily experience only through The Super-blog) and something from my comic-store past. Her hair reminds me of the ill-conceived KISS comics that came out when I was working at Shinder's in MN. It might be the same artist, but I love that Anita Blake looks like the lovechild of Gene Simmons and an overachieving bicyclist.

Totally never done before. Nope.

Except for IWTV's Claudia.

"Well, I'm not big on pre-destination for anyone, even my fictional characters. Anita's series is like a mystery series. Each book stands alone. You get character development from book to book, but they each stand alone. Each book is also a full meal. That being said, there is no overarching end to Anita. Anita will go on as long as the fans are enjoying it this much and as long as I'm enjoying it this much too. I don't know, there may come a time, maybe when I'm 80."

Yes, a mystery. A mystery that's never solved.

Character development = who's having sex w/ Anita next.

And Anita will go on, and on, and on as long as LKH is getting her porn fix enjoying it.

But, oh, look! She finally got the hubby a job. (Jon) He's writing now, too!

"Having written thousand-page novels, where you're in your room by yourself, isolated…"

The LKH books are 1000 pages? say it ain't so!
