Harry Potter Book 8
JKR is doing the Harry Potter Encyclopedia.

“J.K. Rowling told TODAY’s Meredith Vieira she will most likely publish a Potter encyclopedia, promising many more details about her beloved characters and the fate of the wizarding world beyond the few clues provided in the seventh book’s epilogue.

While Rowling hasn’t officially started writing the encyclopedia, although she’s got plenty of material from the stories left on the cutting room floor over the past 17 years.

“I’ve said before that Dean Thomas had a much more interesting history than ever appeared in the books for me, and you just see glimpses of it,” Rowling said. “But to write it really would take us into prequel territory. And that does take us into Star Wars territory. And that’s not really a place I’m planning to go.

“So there’s always been bits that I knew about characters that didn’t make final cuts because they weren’t that relevant.” ...

Fans will have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on Rowling’s next Potter work.

“I’m not going to (write the encyclopedia) tomorrow because I’d really like a break,” Rowling said. “So you may be waiting.”

If this goes ahead, just how nasty will the canon debates be?

That sounds like it'll be fun. I know when I write original stuff, I know all this useless crap about the characters that nobody but me knows - but it still amuses me.

The difference is that likely nobody will care that my character X likes tapioca (or something) but the internet will wank itself to PIECES over the tiniest HP shit that contradicts their thoughts.

Muhahaha. Haha.

First: SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Second But to write it really would take us into prequel territory. And that does take us into Star Wars territory. And that’s not really a place I’m planning to go.

Hmmm...Dean leads to prequels; Prequels lead to sucking /Yoda :D

ILJKR. Even when the series is over and you think you can write your fic in peace, she still manages to reserve the right to Joss you at any time.

Oh, man, I LOVE LOVE LOVE stuff like this. I hope she goes through with it; I have a big enough fangasm of glee every time she adds nuggets like this to her website, but a whole BOOK of it? Made of win, 20 times over.

Bah. I was jaded by McCaffrey's DLG years ago. But if the Encyclopedia Potterica will be more consistent in its canon, squee!

I hope she writes more textbooks. Or maybe with the encyclopedia, we won't need them, but boy do I love Fantastic Beasts and Quidditch Through the Ages.

I just called and told my husband, who in turn told me "Great news, but I'm in the middle of "Malfoy Mannor" and want to finish it on break!"

And to think, 5 years ago he said he'd never read them. hehehe.

That is made of win and awesome, both for the geeky tidbits that will hopefully be included, and for the inevitable wank that will ensue when popular fanon inevitably gets Jossed. A+

(I hope this doesn't show up twice. You can stop sucking any time now, JF).

Hooray! Now the HP fandom can have arguments like the Tolkien fans have over which bits of the posthumous publications by Tolkien's son are canon and which are not.

(Personally, I think a writer should use whatever bit of information makes a good story. Tolkine's portrayal of women in LOTR is not great, but he says in the essay "The Laws and Customs of the Eldar" that Elvish men and women in Valinor are equal, except for childbearing, which only consumes one small part of an Elvish woman's immortal life. I am so stealing that for a Silmarillion fic I want to write).

It's alright, JKR, I don't think you're quite in Star Wars territory until Albus Severus dies on the Mission to Myrkr and James turns evil.

At least she knows where her next billion is coming from. And that's totally not a slander against her, it just means that she hasn't quite...what's the word I'm looking for? Run out of her magic, to use a cliche newspaper phrase.

...she really does need a few dozen fans to factcheck it for her, though.

Tell me I'm not the only one who could care less about side character X's background (even the ones I like!) and is just dying to know more about the politics. Who cares what Harry's job is, did the ministry, and wizard society at large, learn its lesson and embrace the other magical, sapient races?

I could care less about the bloodlines.

What I want to know is how the hell did Neville get the Gryffindor sword if the goblin stole it at Grigotts?
