LJ speaks
http://community.livejournal.com/lj_biz/241884.html

Nothing surprising there. Flock does not protect content and accounts will continue to be suspended with no warning.

More suck and fail from LJ. Who's surprised... *crickets*

I wasn't holding my breath for anything positive to come out of this. I don't see a mass fandom migration out of LJ anytime soon though.

I already have. Most of my flist is doubleposting with Semagic so far, and more are discussing the setup of an organized effort.

It's harder to crosspost with a Mac.

I think Deepest Sender works on anything that can run Firefox, and it's pretty easy to use. I used LJ-sec for all my backposting, though.

Is there a way to get LJ-sec to work without fussing in the console? My brain is too fried for that.

Well, what I did was this:

Go to Selections, hit 'Select All'
Go to Journal, hit 'Repost selected entries to another journal'
Replace "livejournal.com" with whatever journal server I wanted (don't change the rest of the address, though)
Hit 'Begin Reposting'.

Then sit and wait until it's done. You'll have to go back and edit any links in your new journal (I have to fix my entire fic archive post because it all links to livejournal posts), but at least you'll have everything backed up.

It won't crosspost polls if your other journal doesn't have a paid account, but I haven't been able to see those since my paid LJ account ran out anyway, so I didn't care. XD

Ah, but I've got a few problems with Deepest Sender. In particular, it doesn't support poll editing, and it seems to object to using JournalFen. Of course, that could just be me.

JournalFen works fine on it for me, so I dunno.

Works with JF for me. Check and make sure you're replacing livejournal.com with journalfen.net properly in the posting URL?

Is there a program like lj-sec for Macs? (Perhaps you may not know, but someone else may). The idea of lazily following those steps you listed below and letting my computer do the work while I watch a K-drama sounds just heavenly.

All of the downloads I've found require .NET compatibility and Internet Explorer connection, but none of them say whether they're specifically for Windows or Mac, so I dunno, honestly.

I'm planning on crossposting my big entries, but I'm not looking forward to having to copy and paste them over. My kingdom for Semagic.

Well, it's a kludgey hack, but I did manage to get Semagic running on OS X with X11 and Wine, along with a DLL.

Of course, it does require XCode 2.4 to compile (it's a free download, but it's damn near 1 GB in size), as well as a long list of other things.

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS ON A PPC MAC (PowerBook, iBook, PowerMac, or older iMacs). IT FLAT OUT WON'T WORK. THE INSTRUCTIONS LINKED HERE ARE FOR INTEL MAC USERS ONLY!

Instructions can be found here, and the DLL is here (don't link that one around, as it's on my personal website, and while I think my employer may be forgiving about bandwidth, I'd rather not find out). The DLL needs to go in /Users/[you]/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/ (pop open a terminal and cp it there, as Finder doesn't list files starting with '.' due to a Unix standard).

Now, it's not the prettiest thing in the world, but it certainly does work. Also, it isn't callable in Quicksilver, which makes me cry.

I haven't tested it with WordPress yet. I've got it set up to crosspost to here, LJ, GJ and photosinensis.com without a problem on WinXP in Parallels, where things are a bit more elegant and refined. Of course, Parallels requires a valid WinXP license, which isn't something that I'd expect a Mac user to have lying around.

Well those who want to support LJ with their content are welcome to. I am not one of them.

Just because you don't pay them doesn't mean you aren't supporting them. They sell our generated content and feed it out. Done with that.

I'm migrating off and hope to be done with them in a month or two.

To be fair, fandom isn't the end-all for a lot of people. I know I also have a fairly large friends network on Livejournal outside of fandom that I'm not willing to sacrifice just yet.

Hmmm. I have some non-fandom people in my flist, but I can say that the whole reason I opened an account with LJ (and moved another account from Blogger) was because of fandom. If not for fandom I would not be that interested to be online.

Or, "Harry, at the age of [over 18], goes back in time to bonk [dead character]".

Or, "Fun with polyjuice!"

Oh god, is it underage if fifteen-year-old Harry Polyjuices into someone over eighteen? Or if twenty-year-old Fred Polyjuices into seventeen-year-old Harry and screws (of age) Mad-Eye? Or if Harry makes a Polyjuice Potion using an old hair of his to turn himself eleven, then screws someone? Or if Harry makes a Polyjuice Potion using an old hair to turn himself eleven, but goes back in time to when he really would have been eleven -- ?

If LJ can't answer these deep questions, I'll be forced to start singing the pirate song.

But wait!

If Harry used a hair from when he was eleven, would it turn him into his eleven-year-old self, or would he remain his twenty-year-old self?
