Not only was that entertaining, but it led me to Jewcy, which is clearly my new favorite site ever until I get distracted by porn again (or Jewporn. Does that exist?).

And if someone else doesn't icon this, I may have to make my lazy ass do it:
I do not like cliché. I do not like it in a boat. I do not like it with a goat. I do not like it in Harry Potter fan fiction, either.

This is the Goldberg that we like, right?

From comments--> I think we should start a "fan fiction" site for fans of Tod Goldberg's work. And by that, I mean, we should all write stories where old Jewish men masturbate in public. In a corn field. On a golf course. Park bench. Subway. At a writing workshop. Wherever the fan feels they need to have it happen.

If this includes Magneto, as portrayed by Sir McKellen, I'm quite in favor of it.

Dude, if it includes Magneto in just about any canon, I'm in favor for it. He's pretty hot, no matter the medium he's in.

in the comments --> "I mean, seriously, it seems every single fan fic has to involve someone having sex, if not right away, eventually. And, you know, isn't that like pedophilia?"

I think this person should be OFF THE BOAT and probably works for LJ.

Goldberg raises some good points. Writing fic helped me a lot style-wise (I can look back at it and see the beginnings of the way I write now) but I back then and a lot of other fic writers could use instruction in the basics. Not that CW classes aren't full of pretentious assholes, but it was helpful.

His comments on fanfiction are so (sadly) true, and one reason I'm skeptical of some people's claims that fandom is full of a mess of talented original writers just waiting to be discovered- or that in fact some fanfic writers as they stand are ALREADY more talented than canon authors. Yeah, fanfic isn't- necessarily- trying to be good writing, but if you don't care enough to learn the basics of punctuating dialogue, which is very far from the hardest thing in the world, how can someone take you for a serious writer?

And that still didn't come out the way I wanted it to.

I know a lot of fanfic writers have no ambition to write original fiction. I'm talking here about the ones who seem to assume that they would do just fine writing outside fandom, and their fans who are absolutely sure of it.

"'Tis rather a dogmatic view on writing and grammar in my opinion."

Argh.

I'll just be over here in my corner, muttering to myself about how correct grammar is not a matter of opinion. And headdesking.

"You say two plus two is four? You are oppressing me with your dogmatic view on mathematics!"

THEY'RE NOT JUST GUIDELINES, DAMMIT.

...Yes, I'm okay now. I think.

Well, technically some things about grammar are matters of opinion. The Oxford comma is the best example I can think of at this point.

. . . oh dear heavens.

Elena's belief that basic grammar and punctuation (we are not even discussing something as straightforward-but-rather-obscure as proper semicolon use, by God, we're discussing things like WHETHER COMMAS GO INSIDE QUOTATION MARKS INDICATING SPEECH) is a matter of opinion makes me want to beat whoever nominated that story for an award about the ears with a shovel.

GRAMMAR DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY, FANDOM.

This seems a good enough time to ask then. Is it just in journalism where we do the puctuation outside but MLA and whatnot put it inside the quotes, yes? I've been taught both. >_

I will never, ever understand the assumption that all fanauthors must needs be trying to break into professional writing (either in original universes or not). A lot, sure, but for some people it's just a damned hobby. I like to sing and I'm not horrible at it, but that doesn't mean singing professionally is a life goal or anything.

(However - Tod: still twenty billion time better than his brother.)

Ah, nifty, [info]fernwithy got a rec. Go her!

That said, I've decided to judge these stories (or parts of massive fucking 89,000 word fan fiction novels that make me wonder how these people have the time and gumption to write a novel based on characters they don't own when it's all I can do to get my ass in the chair for characters I do own and am passionate about and I've already been paid for)

'Cuz it's fun? :-)
