Rules of fandom
I've been watching a few discussions on the nature of fandom lately and something that seems to keep popping up is the unwritten rules of fandom. A quick google came up with this which I found funny. What do you consider to be the rules of fandom?

"When you hear 'we're all friends here', secure your wallet and carefully make your way to the door."

"Three fans can't agree on the toppings for a pizza, much less anything else."

"Every fandom finds another group to make fun of."

Rule one of fandom is you don't talk about fandom.

...Wait, no.

Actually, those seem pretty apt to me. :B

Rule one of fandom is that you talk about fandom at length, even in places where you're not really supposed to (i.e. Fandom Wank).

And the subway. And in line for the movie theater.

Like that time one of my friends turned to me, during a discussion of SPN, and asked really loudly, "So you don't like incest?"

Our fellow movie-goers were rather perplexed.

*giggles*

My roommates and I like to discuss role-playing plots. In restaurants.

"Well, Lilly's going to die on October 3rd and Sam's going to start having dreams that weekend."

"Last night Thelma invaded Anya's dreams and now Anya's afraid she's a lesbian because she enjoyed it."

"Savannah is a panther cub and she should take a swipe at Summer."

I can only imagine what people around us think.

Please say that's about Hex.

OMG that show is on SO. MUCH. CRACK.

I'm really disappointed that it didn't get a third season.

As far as RPing goes, when I LARPed, we would have long discussions in Wal-Mart about mass slaughter. Hilarity ensued.

We used to plot how we'd murder the Prince on the bus.

One of my friends used to talk about a game we were both in to a friend of hers who was not in the game. She thought she'd explained to him that this was about a role-playing game, but apparently he missed the memo? He was really disappointed about a year later to find out that she 1) had a lot fewer friends than he'd originally thought, and 2) that the majority of the drama she'd explained was just made up.

That made me laugh far more than it probably should have.

Poor guy.

I decided I deeply needed to explain the entire CC saga with references to the infamous Ron/Ginny fic to a friend of mine in the bookstore where we were shopping for kids books for his niece.

Man, I get *stupid* some days, you know?

Well, you're not wrong, but FIJAGH has been around for...well, probably the Fifties or Sixties, would be my guess.

If the unwritten rules of fandom are listed here, then they'll be written and cease to be unwritten rules.

This can only end in anarchy.

The unwritten rule of fandom is that the rules of fandom will be written repeatedly and they will be considered new and innovative and freshly hilarious almost every single time, at least by someone.

The other unwritten rule of fandom is that some crustass fart someone will complain about the rules of fandom and how stale they are.

Fandom ... the reset button never pops back up for long.

"Hey, you! Don't do that!"
"But it doesn't say anywhere that I couldn't-"
"It's one of the unwritten rules, bitch!"

Basically, that's how the rules of fandom work. Make 'em up as you go along.
