Fandom Wank is destructive to fandom and fans. - via metafandom

DISCUSS.

Especially: "I think that in their desperation to keep things going, they often post "wank" that actually contains interesting and intelligent stuff." Or: are we slowly turning into Meta vs. F_W (I certainly hope not).

Edit: Yes, I realize it's been posted to CW already; the comm rules state this is more a discussion community. Yes, I participate in FW and like it (mmm.) - no one's brought that up yet, but just in case. I think my main point of discussion here which I totally failed to articulate is does anyone else feel that sometimes the "wanks" are less wanky and more people just having intellectual discussion? I guess if I find myself intellectually interested in what people are writing about the whole thing is less of a funny spectacle. NOT to say "oh I'm snobby you can't put intellectual debates on FW", just that it really isn't as funny as pages of cat macros or MsScribe.

Well, I personally don't really like Fandom Wank. I'll poke my nose in once in a great while out of curiosity/boredom, but I don't post or participate. Granted though I do think some people deserve to have common sense drilled into their heads for going WAY over the line over a pairing or lack thereof or what have you, I say let it all hash out amongst the parties involved.

Folks don't need to be stuck into online stocks over stuff liek that. I think that's a little much, and going through all the trouble to find these people and put them through the wringer makes you no better than they are.

But that's just me. And the bottom line for Fandom Wank is that no, I don't like it, so I stay away from it and don't participate. Problem solved. :)

The stocks were really more of a public humiliation device. Unless the wankers seek us out, they aren't subjected to it.

I get what you're saying.

Personally I think a lot of the macros/memes/jokes that come up on f_w are really funny, but sometimes it does get a little mean for me and then I step aside. Plus I think people are sometimes classifying things as wank that I don't think should be wank. There's a level difference between the whole Usagi Kou saga with people writing tl;dr entries with personal stories/vendettas and the whole recent band fandom thing, which really is for the vast majority people trying to sort out thorny sexuality issues together via discussion and not trying to strangle each other over the internet.


But I'm all "free speech yay!" so I would never argue that FW shouldn't exist.

Okay, so a community, using their own resources, on their own website, posts commentary (in other words, speech about your speech) about your actions, who forbid their members from doing much other than talk about your actions within their domain, and who actively discourage members to visit the scene of the crime, so to speak, and actively comment on your actions to your face. And you don’t like it, and you want them to stop it.

Pop quiz, hot shot: Who’s rights to freedom of speech are being infringed here?

Seriously. You want harassment? You want people restricting your freedom of speech? You want people who not only want to destroy fandom, but can do quite a good job at it? Be glad we’re not Something Awful. Be glad we’re not GNAA. Be glad, for god’s sake, we’re not Warriors for Innocence or Focus for the Fucking Family.

If the posted wank is a bunch of people having an intellectual discussion instead of being wanky, then the person posting the wank is doing it wrong. Please keep in mind, though, that other people's opinions of what is wanky/funny may differ dramatically from yours.

Case in point: I hate to break this to you, but MsScribe wasn't all that funny the last time she turned up. Also, there are whole entire other websites devoted to cat macros should you wish to review them elsewhere, which has the extra added benefit of a much lesser chance of being screened by a cranky mod!

Also, deletion makes the Baby Jesus cry, even when it's just a tiny little bit like what you did. I know he's kind of sensitive, cries at the drop of a hat and all, but do you have to antagonize him like that? It's the principle of the thing, is all.

Yes. Unfortunately.

Such things are sometimes just grudgewanks. In other cases, they're not so much grudge (i.e., not personal) as the reporter being so wedded to a particular idea that they automatically think anyone who disagrees is wanky. Then there are people who think that if people get upset in discussing a controversial topic, it's automatically wank (this infects otf_wank with distressing regularity). All of these are usually failures as wank reports. (Though sometimes the original poster is crying out to be mocked, so it isn't a total loss.)

Sometimes there are interesting topics in side threads, or buried deep in the silliness of it all. That's a different sort of thing, and it's where personal journals are useful.

But then they won't be "wanks". I feel f_w is very good at eating its own when grudgewank or boringwank or nonwank is posted.

However, I do feel that there is a self-imposed feeling of "must not be featured on f_w" in fandom, and that f_w unintentionally works as a sort of fandom police in that regard. I mean, just because it's self-imposed and f_w doesn't intend it, that doesn't mean the feeling isn't there. Not saying f_w can or should do anything differently, though.

FW isn't supposed to be about sharing your thoughts on yaoi fandom - that's fandom_discuss - unfortunately, once one person does it, everyone feels the need to share their thoughts.

It's supposed to be a point and laugh, and not a srs discussion. And usually, when it is a srs discussion, it gets wanky but quick.

In the period of time since I discovered F_W, I have seen:

"Wank" which appeared to consist of civil discussion and polite disagreement
"Wank" wherein F_W was pointing and laughing at the person who I thought was being rational rather than the person who was actually wanking
"Wank" which didn't actually devolve into wanking until after it was posted about
"Wank" which would never have been posted if the exact same opinion had been posted by someone who wasn't viewed as an 'infamous wanker'
"Wank" which was a civil discussion up until the anonymice trolled it
Wank about F_W
Wankitywank in the comments at F_W
Grudgewank



And despite all that, I like F_W and read it regularly. It's operated, run, and commented to by people, and like all people, the wankas are sometimes wankers. If we had all of the above and didn't have a proud tradition of eating our own, I might be concerned, but the comm is self-policing enough in that regard that the funny outweighs the pathetic and if there's a particularly grudgey or unwanky wank up, I can just ignore it and most of the time it'll fade from fandom and F_W consciousness unless someone is genuinely wanky and keeps it alive.


That being said, I am personally not at all bothered by serious discussion in the comments at F_W and its sister comms, but I can understand why some wankas want it to be taken elsewhere. Do we have a [info]srs_bzness comm or something similar somewhere that it could be moved to, or is this just a "Not In My Back Yard" issue?
