You may or may not have heard by now, but SixApart is offering you the chance to request a $30 gift certificate from them to donate to public school projects through DonorsChoose.org. The catch is that you have to request it by 5 PM Pacific time on Monday, October 1st.

I've donated through Donors Choose before, and a teacher friend of mine has used it to request funding for a project. You can choose whatever project you want, and from what I understand, can even divide up the $30 and fund more than one.

In a fannish turn of mind, I searched and found three project proposals for buying manga for classroom libraries to tempt reluctant readers and to get manga into the hands of kids who are desperate to read more but can't afford it, and set up a challenge to fund them. If you have an LJ and participate in this, or if you don't but wish to give some money anyway, please consider donating part or all of it through my challenge.

Yes, you too can force SixApart to fund future fans. :)

I'm surprised how few people actually understand how this works. LJ gives you a $30 gift cert; you go to DonorsChoose.org and give that $30 to whatever project you choose. You can do this anywhere. What's so difficult to understand?

Heck if I know. I read a few comments and then realized my brain would explode if I read any more, so I stopped.

Oh god, seriously! I get the impression that the OP clarified that after the first few comments to that effect, but the "ZOMG WHAT'S THE CATCH?!?!" frenzy ... What? I mean, I can understand people being confused about wether or not they can participate from outside the US, but ... the hell now?

I'm going to start a drinking game where every time there is a post on LJBiz, I'm going to count to see how many posts it takes before someone mentions "Bannings ZOMG!" before I take that many sips. Christ.

so the thirty dollars they give you is lj's money, right? it's free money for charity?

Yup! Those of us of a cynical frame of mind note that's it's entirely tax-deductible for SixApart. :)

I got my gift certificate code this morning.

WHY did I read those comments, seriously. D:

At any rate, DonorsChoose is awesome - I got a thank-you note from the class I donated to last time and it thrilled me to bits to be able to make such a tangible difference.

Do you know if they're sending out codes to any email request they receive? I've got more than one LJ account, and they both have different email addresses.

I realize this would be taking advantage of their offer, lying and tricking them, but oddly enough I don't feel badly if it means more money for public schools and kids.

I don't know. Hm. I know they're going by email addresses, since I didn't bother to give them my LJ name, but I don't know if they have a way of connecting different addresses.

Wow, the internationalists' shrieking is kinda.... all looking the same to me. Like international businesses in other countries don't focus on their own countries first too. ::signs up for certificate::

Some of the international people shrieking are kind of disgusting me. The ones who say they don't see any reason to participate because it doesn't benefit people in their country are pathetic wastes of humanity. The fact that people are whining and bitching in a post which LJ (for once) is doing a really good thing kind of ticks me off.

It also makes me kind of sad that the DonorsChoose.org site lists nothing at all for my state (New Mexico).

Yes, exactly! I liked the people who were positive and suggested other international charities for next time. I thought that was a good way to handle it if you weren't happy about not being able to donate 'close to home.' And dude, they said right up top they knew it was a US-based charity and they knew it wouldn't make everyone happy. They found a good cause who was willing to partner with them, don't bitch!

I could understand the non-Americans' reservations if it was their own money, but we're being given a chance here to give away someone else's money! I'm all for that!

it would also be nice if 6A found some way to support a more international cause in the future. I'd love to give away even more of their money!

Huh, they almost didn't let me do it, since my Canadese zipcode didn't look real to them, but I looked up their contact info and put in theirs, which evidently was good enough.

Heh, thanks. :D

It took me ages to get them to realize that I was donating, and I think their database is slow to update, because I think there's at least one more person who's gone through my challenge page than they're showing. Ah well.

Thanks for pointing this out, since I don't pay any attention to lj_biz and would never have heard about it without you. I gave my $30 to the "Cartoon Characters Wanted to Revitalize Classroom Library" proposal, since it has the furthest to go and because they want to bring in American comics too and I love both.

My $30 went to Cartoon Characters Wanted to Revitalize Classroom Library since it has a long way to go. My friend also requested a gift certificate, hers will probably go there too.

Yours was all funded by the time I had a look around, so I put mine toward pocket translators for an adult-ed ESL class.

This really was a great project for LJ/6A to support. The only way it could've been better was if it had an international scope.
