Temp bans from FF.net?
Anyone have any experience with getting banned from Fanfiction.net? A friend just noticed this message on someone's profile and it seems... odd.

screenshot (censored by me to protect the possibly innocent)

Is this really what happens when FF.net temp-bans someone? I've never seen it happen, so it's entirely possible, but something about it just seems off to me. All the user's content is still available, nothing's been censored or removed, and the simple plain-text message doesn't seem like the sort of thing a major site would throw up for a ban. ("Fanfiction administrators?" Not Fanfiction.net?) Plus, the person wrote in their blog "I'm still banned from Fanfiction" as if it's been going on a while, but my friend's pretty sure the ban message wasn't on their profile earlier today. Hm.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone's seen anybody else banned this way.

I was banned years ago. I posted a fic that was rated R (not NC-17) one evening, went to bed, woke up to check for reviews and *poof* -- my user page said that I was no longer an active member at ff.net.

Presumably someone reported it, although it truly wasn't a porny fic.

I sent the ff.net administrators an email but I never received an explanation or got my account back. This is pretty common, as I understand it.

Maybe they now have a new system of temporary banning.

*raises hand* Also a victim of grudge reporting here. Someone reported that I'd posted chapters of a fic separately rather than all together on every single one-shot I had posted, even when they weren't in the same fandom, according to the automated report from ff.net.

But we live and learn- now I have a reviewing only account and a posting stories only account. Although that does open me up to sneering comments of "YOU haven't written anything so what do YOU know?!?!"

The only reason I stick around FF.net(as C.J. Sandiego) is that I've managed to find a relatively drama free corner. Also, it's the only place where WOEICS? fic still works. *sheepish*

Hm. iirc, when I got temp banned from ff.net back in the day, the fics I got reported for were yanked and I lost my posting access for a couple weeks. Just a slap on the wrist, really.

Hm, looks odd, that - if it was a temporary ban, wouldn't they either
- only notifiy the user, but not the general public, if the profile stays available
- make the profile unavailable altogether

"banned by Fanfiction administrators" looks strange to me, too.

Also, this is in their profile section, which they can edit themselves, and it uses the same divider bar they have...

My thoughts exactly. My money's on fake, especially given the other stuff this person's been pulling. Thanks for the reassurance.

spam, spam, spam...

I like a small mystery, or else I am nosy. Googling "has been banned by Fanfiction administrators until" doesn't turn up a single result, which is surprising, as they surely ban people regularly.

That looks and sounds an awful lot like an attention-whoring attempt to me. I would think site staff wouldn't misname themselves like that, and if it was a temp-ban I'd expect SOMETHING to be censored/taken down/restricted in some way, but nothing. I'm calling pity-whoring, but then again I've never had an account at FF.net so I don't know how their ban process works.

I think it's a hoax. I recall seeing a profile a few years ago that the author had altered to read, "Well, I've been banned from posting new content until [date]," but there was no "official" message. If users can still access their profiles when temp-banned, then I'd say this user might be banned, but wanted to have a pity-party to make sure everyone knew.

No idea, I didn't know the Pit did temp-bannings-- unless it's a forums thing? I don't go to the forums so I have no idea.

I haven't been banned but I was served with a warning by the Bot after they deleted some stories of mine that had a couple song lyric quotes at the time the "no songfic or any song lyrics" rule was announced but I wasn't banned. Another user was banned at this time and her account totally vanished, no "banned user" anything. Turned out the be a grudge report.

That was before people could put user icons on their profiles though so I dunno if anything's changed?

I once got banned for a week and that didn't happen, they just deleted the story. That was three or four years ago, so it might work differently now. Still, it looks fishy to me.
