getting harrassed? stop playing and cry some more
Does this go here?  If not, yell at me and I'll move it.  It just seemed a bit too srs bznss for fwank proper.

So the latest patch for World of Warcraft included a nifty new feature -- in game voice chat.  And while third-party voice programs have existed for a while, this is really great for times when you may be put in a group with people you don't necessarily know, and who don't want to organize all the program info (for example, pvp battlegrounds are pretty randomly assorted and from different servers, too, so it'd be a bit impossible to get them on all teamspeak.)

So everybody has easy access to voice chatting with each other!  Great, yeah?

Not so great.  Apparently, the male population of WoW is having problems remembering that not only do girls play their game, but girls are people too.  Complaints of harrassment and cries for Blizzard to do something start flooding the forums.  Someone starts a list of the threads here.

Of course, Blizzard is deleting these threads or replacing the first posts with a legalese version of "STFU NOOB," so who knows how long it'll be up.

This is why I love being a healer. Because I can go, "Oh, you're going to be an ass? Fine, have fun finding a new healer." Now I just wish my tank was higher, because finding one of those hurts even more.

Oh, this is the lounge, I can share my thoughts on yaoi! It is a little oversensitive, considering what they expect Blizzard to do, but Blizzard has the three hour or three day bans, which seems a lot more positive than deleting posts of girls who pay for their service complaining about being harassed when using the service. As a feminist, that response really doesn't inspire me to keep paying $15 a month.

So true! I don't know why I don't play a Healer class anymore. You're always in hot demand and people really don't want to piss off the healer.

Yeah, that was pretty much the main benefit of playing my tank. "Oh, you're a girl... ... ... okay!" And then they would not be assholes. Or I would let them die.

Hell, some of the most fun I've had as a tank was in letting idiots die until they got the message.

... It took me a moment to realise you mean "higher" as in level, not as in drugs. Sadly, my cynical side chimed in with "Oh, I see you've met some of the tanks I've PUGed with?" Er, yeah.

It's because the game is harder than WoW. For serious :P

If you have to constantly group to get to high levels, you have to be a decent player and likely not an asshat who'll piss off groups.

WoW? When you can solo to 70 by throwing your cat at the keyboard, the game gets really popular, and you get all the baggage that comes with that. FFXI is more of a classic MMO style, so it turns a lot of new players off.

FFXI is fun if you have people to play it with :D The economy sucks, but every MMO gets a crap economy eventually.

The joy of being a semi-casual player - you can hook up for raids, but no one expects you to have Vent or TeamSpeak.

Used to consider it for RvR, but the people I usually partner with live in the same house as me, so I can just yell across the room at them.

I don't think Blizzard VoiP caused this, vent and TS existed long before, it's just now people are trying to get Blizzard to do something about it.

I for my part don't usually get harassed, though one of my friends was complimented on what a nice voice she had, and encouraged to talk by our raid leader. I was horribly embarrassed, but my friend took it in great stride.

Well... Vent and TS were generally private use, and were generally only used among guilds or people who were friends in real life. While the harassment is nothing new, it was on a smaller scale and while I've heard horror stories about women getting harassed by guildies, but for the most part, you're playing with people who you at least know casually through the game. When it's a stranger with the full backing of anonymity in a PUG in an unmonitored environment, Gabe's Internet Fuckwad Theory has a good chance to apply.

Just glad that whenever my husband and I PUG anything, one of us is either tanking, healing, or both. You want to be a dick? Fine, find a new group, or get kicked. Granted, I've never met that brand of asshole in WoW.

*sagenod* I play a lot with friends, and if my boyfriend is tanking, he does not put up with crap. I love him for it.

I completely agree with Gabe's theory.

I've never been harassed about being a girl. The closest thing I get is politely correcting people to 'ma'am' when they address me as 'sir' (because I'm a woman, playing female characters, zomg) and occasionally a 'hey, you're actually a girl' when they hear me. To be fair, I *also* go 'hey, you're actually a girl', if not purely in my head.

I've heard someone harass a girl while I was grouping with him (some baggage about ), I've never been harassed myself. Never even hit on. In a game with so much gender bending ("if I'm going to look at an ass for hours on end, it'd better be cute") going on, and with so few women supposedly playing, I'm not surprised by that reaction. I will likely have it mentally a few times myself.

And to add some LOL to the thread, someone's social experiment regarding the "special treatment" of the ladies in MMOs: part one and two.

Ah, my lame story, which I never finished, was that of a guy who hated his friend's girlfriend. She had characters on her boyfriend's account and they shared it. The friend hated her, and also knew the password, so was attempting to log onto the account whenever she was on to keep bumping her. Women couldn't play WoW or something.

To be fair, he was a hunter.

Nah, I don't hate all hunters, it just seems that a huge proportion of them, well, suck in groups. Like, not turning pets off of growl after the tank has asked them to, not training cower if they can, and pulling willy nilly with no regard for the rest of the party. I've had them ask what growl was. PUGs are VERY BAD TIMES.

Usually give a new hunter the benefit of the doubt though. But, if my tank is making the group, he won't invite them unless he knows them or is desperate.

*grin* I've been hit on, but not in a bad way. At least, the person doing the hitting on backed off after finding out that my boyfriend plays on my server. A lot of our interaction after that was joking flirtation that could easily have been mistaken for harassment, but I've never had an actual problem with a player.

If I had, I think I might just have let him splat on the last boss (ah, the many ways the tank can screw you over) and "accidentally" looted before he resurrected.

I've been harassed (and "harassed") for a lot of things. For being a redhead. For being a Canadian. For being bilingual. For being a Mac user. Of all things, being a girl is the least offensive thing I am.

Also, I personally prefer having my gender indicators correct.

Eh, it's the forums. My husband reads them heavily to learn about classes, but I can't stand to listen to every class whine about how they need buffs and make unreasonable demands, and I can't deal with the huge amount of fuckwads on them. I make him sort through the crap. The forum community sucks hardcore.

The game itself? I've run into loads of crappy players, but few, if any, true dicks. Granted, I'm sure if I spoke in general about such abuse, I'd get a lot of the same replies, but a lot of people keep it out of the game during an instanced dungeon where they need the run too.

Granted, I also haven't done a pick-up group with the new chat since its release, so I may have some special times in my future, but I still doubt it.

It's not the game, it's the forums. Especially General. There are a billion and one great places to talk WoW online, but that place should be avoided like the plague.

Yup. And don't read the forums if you want to enjoy your class at all. Funny how many people in-game are perfectly happy with theirs :)

And while I agree that harassment sucks (one of my two main characters is a male, for partly this reason), I do feel that the original poster was a bit histrionic. If you can't handle the big scary internets, stay off.
