Why?
No seriously, why? What on earth would possess a studio to do this to The Dark Is Rising? How can they think this is a good idea?

Um, this movie has made me want to cry/hurt things since the casting calls came out and they described the Stantons as a selfish, dysfunctional family. At least now they aren't the Stantons anymore...?

Today I may have sort of yelled at a friend of mine who asked if I wanted to see it.

SIGH.

I only read the one book, not the whole series, but this still has me saying WTF.

Also, Will is American.

Why? Because a movie about British kids caught up in magic would never sell?

I have severe TWS, so I'm debating seeing it. I'll probably beat up anyone who sits next to me (re: roommate) in the process as I watch the film rape my favorite books from my childhood; in fact, I think I'll try to think of it was some crazy fanon AU based on the DiR-verse, and not an actual attempt???? at book adapatation. Then I'll go home and write a frothing entry in my JF before consoling myself with the gay subtext in Silver on the Tree. =(

...Although reading the review rapidly killed a great deal of the TWS, so maybe I'll just see if I can find it in a value bin some months down the line. =(

I take great solace in that they didn't try to do anything having to with The Grey King, because I think I might become more than a little violent to see Bran canon-raped so.

*breaks down sobbing*

When I went to see Stardust with a friend, they showed the trailer for The Golden Compass and The Dark is Rising. She'd known about the first (and griped about how they had killed the Great Atheist Epic), but the second had caught her completely off guard.

I will treasure that look of horror on her face until the day I die.

I also remember being completely incoherent for a while, and my boyfriend laughing at the look of horror on my face.

Because, dude, if you are going to ignore the entire book to make a movie, you might as well go all the way.

But okay, turn it into a duller version of the Goonies, that works, too.

I've never read the books, and I reserve final judgment on this until I see the movie (which I might never do, actually). For now, however, it looks like this will be one of those adaptations that strays so far from the source material that it gives movie adaptations in general a bad name. Granted, with some movies based on books, it sometimes is a good idea to make lots of changes: think of Jurassic Park, Stardust (the last third, at least),The Shining, or Sleepy Hollow. In this case, however, and probably as a result of all the changes from the book, the resulting movie just doesn't look very appealing to me.

It's like they just took everything and reversed it.

The best things about the book (the harmony and unity of the Stantons, the Will-Merriman relationship, the Arthurian angle) are now the worst. And the bad things in the book are now being hailed as good and wonderful!

...did anyone in the production actually read the books?
