Bwah?
Warner Bros president of production Jeff Robinov has made a new decree that "We are no longer doing movies with women in the lead".

Of course, Warner Bros has always been male-centric in its movies. But now the official policy as expressly articulated by Robinov is that a male has to be the lead of every pic made. I'm told he doesn't even want to see a script with a woman in the primary position (which now is apparently missionary at WB).

Well then. I guess I'll go see Jodie Foster's new one (of which apparently poor box office returns are part of this call for no-women leads), and that will be it for me. I'll throw my silly girly dollars at some other movie studio.

Well that sucks. But it's not as though they were making large numbers of female-lead movies before. Looking through my own DVD collection I can find several with young female protagonists (Labyrinth, Whale Rider, Mirror Mask, Spirited Away, etc), but only All About My Mother and Amelie with adults, and neither of those came out of Hollywood.

It's not the shitty scripts, it's the women!

I guess it was only a matter of time before one of the major studios did this. The anti-feminist backlash is getting really bad these days.

Does this mean the next two Harry Potter movies won't have Emma Watson in the lead anymore?

I have a great new idea for a script: Jeff Robinov gets fired. It would have a male lead!

...what.

(Somebody remind me, how much money did PotC make for Disney? You know, that wildly popular movie trilogy with (some nice eyecandy) a female as the central character? Yes, the men played very big roles, but it's really her story. Or all the Jane Austen adaptations? People are nuts for Jane, even if the films aren't HUGH BLOCKBUSTERS OMG.)

Also, fuck, does this mean I can't see Sweeney Todd?

Because the first Tomb Raider did so poorly at the box office. And Bend it Like Beckham, and *squints at her DVD collection* Kill Bill, and all three Pirates of the Caribbean movies (okay, so it was more like Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley, but with the way she was promoted on the posters and ads, she was a lead in her own right).

And the aforementioned Jodie Foster movie tanking at the box office had everything to do with the fact that she's female, and nothing to do with the fact that a) the movie SUCKED and b) was based on an incredibly controversial incident/individual that most New Yorkers (the biggest US market) old enough to remember it do not look back on fondly. Don't underestimate the power of b), either, there was an awful lot of wank in the run up to the movie and I know a lot of folks back home, particularly black folks, who were disappointed in Jodie over this role and swore they weren't going to see it. Oh and the movie also came out at a time of year that is historically bad for movies making money.

Why the fuck does this dimwit still have a job? If my GED-having ass can figure this one out, with my only credentials being a subscriber to Entertainment Weekly and a former poster on Fametracker.com, why aren't I running production at WB? :P

Expect some MAJOR backpedaling in the next week or so.

Wait ... what? Because that made any sense. Oh, yes, a movie sucks cuz there's (OMG!) a woman in the lead, and not cuz the writer(s) and/or director suck.

You fail at life, dude. And have guaranteed that I won't use money on WB products anymore. Kudos.
