Question
Hey all -

My dad and I were talking tonight and he was trying to recall a children's television host from his childhood (50s-60s). He says the guy wore a crazy wig and liked to blow things up with firecrackers, like small cars and, his coup de grace, a rat.

So: does anyone know of a children's tv host who was fired from the network because he decided to blow up a rat on air in front of millions of children? :D

Thanks!

Is it this guy?

I remember there was a legend among us teenage Toledo boys that the Ghoul show started in Cleveland, but he had somehow gone too far there. Legend was he blew up a rat on the air and was somehow banshed from Cleveland.

I have no answer to the OP's question. I'm simply enthralled by the fact that someone with the username [info]airborne_rodent does.

I agree; that's entirely too appropriate.

I agree... and the fact that there was ever (apparently) a children's entertainer called The Ghoul is coming in a close second.

I remember the Ghoul, but I don't think of him as a childrens entertainer- he hosted a late night horror movie show. I thought it was Detroit based, not Toledo tho...(Maybe after he left Toledo?)
I can ask my older sister about it tho- she was in HS when he was popular, and I remember some of her friends being ghoul fans.

Talked to my sister- she remembers him, says he was on on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, not late night.
He did do *something* that got him thrown off the air, but she couldn't remember exactly what. She thought it had happened after she went to college (Post 1979) but I seem to recall it being before she left for GMI.

Seems like that's him. My dad said it was based out of Toledo when he was a kid. Who knows, he's old. ;)

I totally remember that guy! My big brother watched him all the time when we lived in Detroit. I watched the original "Satan's School for Girls" on The Ghoul. It was a big deal when the show was brought back to Detroit after it was canceled by the Ohio station. Detroit appreciates a guy who blows things up or sets thing on fire.

That sounds about right. My dad initially thought it was Ghoulardi (must have been his old stage name) and that the show was based out of Toledo, Ohio. My dad was in Ottawa (teeny-tiny Catholic town) at the time, so he would have been in range of the broadcasts.

Sweet! He'll be happy to hear this. ^_^

Ah, this dude.

Doesn't mention anything about a rat, but then, Wikipedia's not always 100% right...
