Scary.
http://www.ljfind.com

If you search properly, you can get it to display not just friends only posts, but private posts in their entirety. They have a community on livejournal, ljfind, with a post that supposedly allows you to request to remove you from their search, but some people report they've asked for months with no luck.

Does anyone know of a way to get this to block your journal completely?

Apologies if this is old news. I took a look around but didn't find anything on it.

Much like LJSeek, Google, and the Wayback Machine, the only way it can show you private or flocked posts is if they were originally posted open. No security breach, just the power of archiving.

Theoretically if you set no-robots on your LJ, you can block most stuff, but it doesn't help with services that ignore that, like this one. Best I could suggest is post to their LJ as directed.

There is a secret way to get things like that that don't honor robot tags to stop archiving you, involving going into the admin console and changing how much of your posts are released in rss feeds - you have to switch it to title only.

But god knows what the code is, I've long since forgotten it.

Found it!

set synlevel title

The default is full - you can also set to "summary". This won't get rid of the old posts, but it will virtually make your journal unarchivable on those things, as what they actually archive is the rss feeds, which is why if a post was public, even for a minute, they have it.

Thanks! I knew there was some console thing that helped but damned if I could remember what it was.

Wow, that's useful (for an insane friends-only freak who nonetheless is sometimes sloppy enough to accidentally post things publically for a second before I realize the mistake). Thanks!

FYI, one of the latest LJ upgrades lets you set the default privacy level of new posts, here. (You could do it via console before, but now they have it in the interface.) It doesn't seem to change the privacy dropdown when posting, but the post is flocked anyway.

Wow, another useful tip! I don't mind using the admin console but I hadn't even thought about the idea of changing my default posting level before. I just always assumed it could not be done. Thank you, thank you!

This is a supremely dumb question, but how do I get into the admin console?

For future reference, if you enter "admin console" in the FAQs search, it'll bring up topics where its mentioned with a link. I still haven't found a link from the manage accounts page.

Agreeing with everyone else here; I looked for my journal, and I was only able to find instances where other people had mentioned me.

Hm. But as someone else mentioned, those were all public at one point or another, even if only by accident. Oh well.

At least I'm boring enough no one's going to go searching for me.

Yeah, it doesn't bother me much either. But you know, paranoids. :)

Yeah, and I can understand the paranoia. On my old journal, there were things I forgot to flock that if I hadn't fixed quickly, would have have caused a lot of trouble. If they resurfaced on that site, and someone went searching for them . . . well.

It didn’t even show my latest public post. I got better results from google.

me too. and I don't have the low-profile option on my journal at all. I'm moderately good at making sure my private posts are at least locked...
