PSA: LJ, you lose.
How to get rid of that annoying snap.com crap: Go into one of the popups, mouse over the gear symbol, hit "disable," and clicky the box. That should kill it. Simple enough, but I had to look around a while to find how to do it, so I figured some of you might appreciate the heads-up.

[edit] [info]melannen provides this link for killing it deader!

And [info]papervolcano provides link for specific Adblock instructions. Thank you folks. ♥

I have no idea what you're talking about, so I assume using Firefox with Adblock Plus is another way of killing whatever it is I haven't seen.

I'm using that also, but I still got it - links on LJ will give you a little snap.com popup. It's possible you've got more adblock on that I do, though.

Hmm. I've not noticed it yet, but if I get a pop-up, I'm sure China will hear my witty response.

Ah, I guess that NoScript's doing me another favor there :D

Yeah, I think that between ABP and NoScript, I'm not seeing it either. Because I've been seeing this complaining about snap.com and had ~no~ clue WTF people were talking about.

I also don't see it with AdBlock on Firefox. I only see it on Safari.

That also, however, puts a snaps.com tracking cookie on your computer, so they come back if you clean out your cookies or if you turn up your cookie security settings.

If you want to kill it completely dead forever, this trick basically keeps your computer from being able to access Snap at all. (I am currently using it; it works. It also presumably works for other annoying sites.)

Is is a *secure* cookie? Otherwise it might not get through my javascript settings :D

That's... a lot of steps. I just went into Options and selected the "Never show me this shit ever again no matter what webpage I am on" and bam, it went away! No more icons, no more links, nothing.

No, I mean when you get this screen:

Instead of choosing Disable, go to Options and select ALL Sites

Unless that is what you did and I'm misreading you (in which case, whoops and sorry for being so anal).

[info]coyotegirl

Yes, that is what I did. The other parts of the post were other solutions other commenters provided, for more permanent disablement of the popups.

[info]dejana
2007-10-28 05:37 am UTC (link)
That works by putting a cookie on your machine. If you ever have to clear your cookies, the previews will come back. Hence the alternate, more permanent, methods.

I love how I didn't notice anything about this snap.com crap because my browser resembles a fortress.

Apparently I turned off the feature when it was first mentioned, but I don't even remember doing so... LJ is apparently pulling so much crap it doesn't even register with me anymore when I opt out of something.

Is it just me or is that not a very good place to end up at, as a business?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]vergilsparda
2007-10-28 03:45 am UTC (link)
You had to opt in to get the feature, so it was never on for you in the first place.

[info]crysiana

I don't recall opting in but I do have it, though I'll allow that they may have pulled a "by signing in on the front page you are opting in" thing. If it weren't tracking me (which I assume it does) I wouldn't even mind it so much.

[info]harrylovesron
2007-10-28 07:03 am UTC (link)
Really? Because I never opted in and I still got it on both my accounts. Or was it "opt in" as in "we'll assume you want it unless you specifically tell us no"?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]jar
2007-10-28 07:31 am UTC (link)
I got the impression it was "opt in" for payed accounts and everyone else got it automatically.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]bemysty
2007-10-28 08:17 am UTC (link)
That can't be it either, since a lot of paid users complained on the news post... and I DO have a vague recollection of turning something off, and my account is paid.

When it came out last month I actually opted out via the control panel in LJ. This time 'round I read that it was being automatically implemented for all Basic and Plus accounts, regardless of opt status. If I can remember where that was at (it was on LJ somewhere in the manage settings or FAQ) I'll post a link and the exact text.

Sometimes when you hover over links, it'll show you a thumbnail of it in a Snap.com browser window.

It actually doesn't bother me that much, but I'm sure if you have a crapton of links on your Flist it's preview overkill.

No. But I do a lot of Flist reading in class and it's convenient to know what I'll be clicking on before I do. :D Suddenly laughing like a maniac at random Grindeldore crackart during a discussion about the death penalty earns you some strange looks.

You can actually turn it off via LJ itself: go into the Viewing Options page and uncheck the "Graphic previews" box.

All that does is turn it off for your own journal - meaning they don't show up for anyone, but *only* on your journal. There's no way within LJ to turn it off for all pages.

Thanks for the instructions! I'm totally confused about those previews, but I think that it's not *only* lj-account based, whether they show up or not also has to do with your browser. IE6 at work doesn't show the previews, but Safari at home does... this is while signed in to the same account.

Anyway, I will shortly be turning them off everywhere, yay! :)
