Well, it makes sense for her to do it. Also, if it's mostly just going to be what's on the website, what's the point of doing the book? The website gets you the info for free.

Well she's planning on releasing her own encyclopedia isn't she?

But I guess this means a lot of fanzines are going to be worried over the next couple of months...

Not terribly suprising, considering that it includes most of the text from FBWFT.

I don't blame Jo.

Although I do wonder why the Lexicon wants to release a book version of their site. I mean, why a book when you can just go to the website for free?

Okay, so, I'm trying to follow thought processes here:

JK not only approves of the Lexicon, but gave it an award a few years ago.

Lexicon, hit by the stupid stick, decides to print their information without running it past JK/WB/Bloomsbury/etc.

JK says "Whoa! Net okay, print bad. Mmmkay?"

Publisher is shocked by this. The stupid stick has been making the rounds.

... I'm kinda baffled at the logic here. JK approved the site, but I can understand why she doesn't want a print book to be made about it.

Personally, if the Lexicon really wants to print, they need to sit down with JK/WB/legal eagles, and decide that "Okay, so JK gets 50% of the profits. WB gets 10%, the Lexicon gets 5%, and the rest goes to... [insert charity(ies) of choice]" Cos then, everyone comes out looking good.

Sorry. I'll take my Earth logic elsewhere.

I totally understand where JKR's coming from, but how did it get as far as suing? Did she ever contact the Lexicon folks and request that they stop trying to publish a book version? Or did they just decide that it would be a great idea to publish a book version and go right ahead without letting her know, and now it's gone too far for a simple request?

I totally get her reasons for the lawsuit, and they're completely valid. I just don't understand how a book like this managed to escape the notice of Bloomsbury/Scholastic/etc. legal eagles in the first place. Aren't publishers obligated to report their deals?

Though JKR is a little bit lacking in logic if she seriously thinks that a print-version of the Lexicon would hurt sales of an encyclopedia she wrote. 'Cause it really wouldn't. I'll just tell myself her lawyers convinced her that Lexicon Steve is somehow competition.

I've already seen one person on my f-list get mad at JKR for suing.

Personally, I understand her reasons. Besides, the Lexicon would be incomplete, since JKR would presumably add much more detail and insight to the characters she created.

*shrug*

I don't understand why we need a print version of the Lexicon anyhow. It's already online, and it's free. Why pay extra for the same info?

Didn't they, you know, ask first? I'm kind of surprised it ever came to this.

Wasn't it generally known that Lexicon Steve was hoping to be the official HP encyclopedia guy after DH, with the author's approval and access to JKR's old notes and everything? Maybe this is his ill-thought-out back-up plan after the disappointment of learning JKR was going to do her own.

I was told that she was asked. And quite clearly said no.

It was talked about at the Prophecy convention in Toronto this summer, and apparently Steve was quite miffed that she refused to give him permission - as were some of the people to whom he related his tale of woe. Because, you know, entitlement.

So why this still went ahead when they knew how she felt, I really don't understand.
