Curious: So just how is SUP's record on business practices and customer relations? In some ways, looking at their 100 days plan and the new lj_policy comm, they're giving those with misgivings on the abuse policies, various content policies, etc, what they want, and promising asked-for new featurs.

But just what do Russian users think of SUP?

Dislike? I don't speak Russian, but this says "Considering SUP has been crap for the Russian users, I don't think this is really bothering them."

Yeah, I had seen some dissatisfaction about their policies, but I wasn't sure whether this is just the griping of a few, or a general expression of disatissfaction.

Thanks for the info. My, this sounds rather ominous.

Samples of some complaints about SUP.

Browsing a bit, I'm getting marginally more concerned about the fact that SUP's owner is BFF with Putin? Oh noes, my pro-democracy sentiment!

I can't remember where I read it, but somewhere in the LJ news post comments someone was speculating about what happens if the servers get moved to Russia and at that point would they, and therefore all of LJ, fall under Russian laws? Taking that possibility and pairing it with the fact that the owner of SUP is BFF of now-Emperor For Life Putin makes me very worried. The moment SUP releases a new TOS I'm going over it with a fine toothed comb, then coming back here to JF and paying for another year.

I honestly don't think LJ would survive a move to Russian servers -- sounds like a recipe for mass riots to me. But still... I ProQuest'd Alexander Mamut in a fit of boredom and, man, this guy is one of the closest supporters of the Yeltsin and Putin governments? One of the most powerful men in Russia? Even if the servers never move, do I want to dole out $23 a month (RP accounts, sob) to a Russian company that's buddy-buddy with I-will-make-myself-PM-next Putin? And will mother Russia turn against shirtless Putin icons?

I concluded that I probably contribute to the Russian economy somehow else anyway/my indecision meant I'll keep doing what I've been doing. But it does make me wish I paid more attention in classes.

I remember the uproar when SUP tried to take anyone using cryllic to post. The russian users were not pleased and I don't think SUP was much better than 6A.

Still I've bailed from LJ so I've got my popcorn.

I've got my own blog, but most of my friends are still on LJ. So I'm hoping, given that SUP isn't better, that it isn't worse, or I'll have to follow them all to new services.

I feel your pain, I'm in the same boat.

Still, I have a pied a terre in all the other services already so its not as bad as completely starting from scratch.

Bizarre, unless your isp is a distant subdivision of a russian owned set of ips.

I think it's my account they have, since I get that when I log in at home, and when I log in from work, and the university has its own servers.

Well, I won't say that Wired is the most objective publication in the world, but they've essentially said that SUP might be backed by people who want to destroy a haven of free speech for Russian users.
