Celebrity Worship, Personality and Temperaments
I found a blog post which I believe may be relevant to our interests: Celebrity Worship, Personality and Temperaments. The a brief summary of the source article can be located here. (The link on the blog is dead.) And yes, I know the article is sort of old, but, hey, so am I.

From both:

People were split into one of three groups by answering positively towards statements such as:

* ‘My friends and I like to discuss what my favourite celebrity has done’ (entertainment-social)
* ‘I consider my favourite celebrity to be my soul mate’ (Intense-personal)
* ‘If I walked through the door of my favourite celebrity’s house she or he would be pleased to see me’ (Borderline-pathological)

See anyone you know in that last category?

Oddly enough, I thought they should have considered a 4th category...

And the first should just be plain old 'fangirl.'

Huh, three different dimensions? It sounds to me more like three different regions of a single dimension.

Yup, I've known the Pathological type -- I'd argue with the borderline aspect. It is not something fun to be involved with, trust me, especially when this is someone you know in real life as opposed to online.

Agreed. There are people that you end up avoiding constantly during your lunch break because you don't want to hear about their Hinckley-esque plans to impress their celebrity love.

Oh, yeah. I actually knew one who had a restraining order taken out against them.

I've known quite a few in all three, but a select number special individuals in the last one. Fortunately, they've never been "set off" by having their affections reproached. x.x

1. Yes. Why else would I be on the Genesis forums and the Phil Collins forums?

2. Er... no.

3. Does the last one still count as Borderline-pathological if I've actually known (IRL, not on the 'net or in my imagination) the celebrity in question for 20+ years?

Actually, now that I think about it, even though he's my friend he might not really be my favorite celebrity. How weird is that?

Well, he's not a celebrity to you anymore. He's the guy you kick back and have a beer with or whatever, not worship from afar as he stands atop his pedestal. I don't think its strange at all.

not worship from afar as he stands atop his pedestal.

I'm snickering at that mental image. Heh.

I've met people in the intense-personal category. I'm honestly not one of them at all, but it doesn't bother me much until it edges over into #3. I guess the internet has jaded me big-time.

(Actually I don't really do #1 much either. I like, say, House, but I'm not all that interested in what Hugh Laurie does in his off hours. He's a cool guy and all and if I'm really bored I might pay attention when someone posts about it but... yeah, I really don't care much.)

They're missing one absolute crucial category.

4. 'My friends and I like to write stories about what our favourite celebrity might do if, say, trapped in a cabin in the woods with nothing but a roaring log fire, a large fur rug, a bottle of baby oil, and his four celebrity bandmates for company.'

There we go, fixed.
