Peter Jackson to produce "The Hobbit"

Still not as good as directing it, but better than him being left out entirely, yes?

Two films, one of the Hobbit for 2010 and one for a Hobbit sequel/LotR prequel for 2011, to be filmed simultaneously. I am in geek heaven today.

And hey, it doesn't say that he won't direct it, just that it's not determined yet! :D

Sources I've seen are reporting Guillermo Del Toro for directing.

I googled it and found this interview with del Toro, where he says:
I was never into heroic fantasy. At all. I don't like little guys and dragons, hairy feet, hobbits -- I've never been into that at all. I don't like sword and sorcery, I hate all that stuff.
So, um, I hope not!

And yet he expressed interest in directing the "Deathly Hallows" film recently, so maybe he's changed his tune on the swords and sorcery?

I say "yes" to Del Toro for The Hobbit and no to him for HP. I think he's a great director, but I don't think I'd like how he'd handle HP. So I'd rather him be too busy with The Hobbit to consider it again.

Well, I'd rather him than Sam Raimi for The Hobbit, but I think I would LOVE him for Deathy Hallows. He's an excellent director.

Oh he is, but the minute he said "do it on my own terms," I cringed. Yeah I'm one of those people that values loyalty above all else (I know fandoms really split on this), and as absolutely gorgeous as some canon events in the last book would be under his vision, that made me super wary.

Alfonso Cauron is one of my favorite directors (ever since I was wee and watched A Little Princess on repeat), but I couldn't stand his vision of HP in PoA. Unfortunately some of the things I disliked most continued into the following movies. That's the last time a director "radically deviated" from previous films in the HP franchise and there's no reason for me to think I wouldn't dislike the result just as much if Del Toro did it.

Maybe it's because uber fanboy Peter Jackson is producing and because New Line knows part of their success is how pleased many LotR fans were with the films, but I think if he did The Hobbit it would be more loyal to Tolkien's vision than if he did DH.

Young Aragorn? The Necromancer?

Something about young Aragorn might be interesting, but that'd probably include his stay in Gondor. Younger version of movie!Denethor, anyone?

My brain registered "Necromancer" as "Necrophiliac".

. . . yeah, I think I'd better stay away from fanfiction for a while.

I hope it's more like Meet the Feebles than LotR was.

This actually makes me happy. I like my Tolkien with slightly shorter battle scenes than PJ comes out with.

And besides, I'm a rabid Faramir fan. So, hm, I just don't like him that much.

I think I said that before, but I would be more enthusiastic about Jackson being back in the game if there were no dwarves whatsoever in The Hobbit. You know, after his take on Gimli I just don't want to meet his Bombur.

*sigh* I did swear that if I ever found out PJ was involved in a "Hobbit" film in any way, shape or form that I would attempt to contact him and offer my services as a volunteer Elf extra. Save them money on one wig, anyway, my hair's long enough.

Anyone got any contact information?

Dunno how much it'll help, but there's always this page on the official PJ fansite, "The Bastards Have Landed."

I, for one, vowed that the minute The Hobbit movie was announced, I would immediately drop everything I was doing, go to New Zealand, and try to join the design team at Weta Workshop.

... so what you're saying is, we have until 2010 - that's two and a bit years - to get our opening-night costumes ready.

:D :D :D :D
