About reporting theft
So, I came upon a story in LJ that is direct copy of late Thamiris's In Principio. I haven't encountered the author yet, but I'd like to know if there's anything else I can do aside from facing the author directly? Should I report LJ abuse?

ETA: In Principio is not the only thing that the author plagiarized: He also plagiarized Thamiris's journal entries. See this thread for links. I have made an abuse report and informed the mods of tham_preserved at LJ, and I'm in process of informing the mods at the "author's" communities.

ETA II: Comment plagiarism, too. WTF?

ETA III: LJ Abuse hasn't responded yet, but some of the fannish communities that I contacted have reacted. He's been banned from slash and classics_slash (Thamiris was a member in the latter) and both scofield_sucre and pbslash have promised to act. Also, I've made a post at stop_plagiarism that is waiting for mod approval. ETA: pbslash has posted an announcement about what happened. There will be also an announcement at scofield_sucre . (Update: Announcement is up.)

ETA IV: thelana posted this info in [info]ingrid's LJ-post:

"For what it's worth, boyan_fraser posted in my journal (like here)and I have IP tracking on. It lists his IP as 89.216.183.201. ip-address traces him to Belgrad, Serbia

IP address [?]: 89.216.183.201 Copy [Whois]
IP address country: ip address flag n/a
IP address state: n/a
IP address city: Belgrade
IP address latitude: 44.818600
IP address longitude: 20.468100
ISP of this IP [?]: Srpske Kablovske mreze - Serbia BroadBand (SBB) D.
Proxy: None / Highly Anonymous [Proxychecker]
Organization: IP Range for cable modem customers
Host of this IP: [?]: cable-89-216-183-201.dynamic.sbb.co.yu [Whois]"

ETA V: boyan_fraser's profile is also from Thamiris, and he has been plagiarized her from his first entry on. This just gets worse and worse.

Also, people have wondered if this story of his has also been stolen, although it doesn't seem to be from Thamiris. (According to this, it might be his own.)

ETA VI: Possible courses of action were brought up in this thread (courtesy of [info]snacky), but because Thamiris didn't want her family to know about her hobby, her family members can't be contacted.

Also, LJ Abuse responds:

"Dear user bofoddity,

Thank you for contacting us with your report of this situation. Though the actions of this user are reprehensible, we are unfortunately unable to accept reports from persons other than the individual directly involved -- in this case, due to the circumstances, we would need to receive a report from a family member of the deceased user. We are not able to accept reports from concerned friends or other users.

If you have the ability to contact such a family member, I urge you to point them to the following link [http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=105] -- this FAQ contains information on how they can make a report to the Abuse Prevention Team so that investigation and proper action can be taken.

Please note that in the case of possible copyright infringement, LiveJournal would require some additional information to be provided before investigation can take place. To file official notification of copyright infringement, a family member will need to follow the steps described at http://www.livejournal.com/legal/dmca.bml. Note that the Report Abuse form linked in the FAQ mentioned previously contains an option for reporting copyright violations, which will then lead the person through the process of filling in all the necessary information through a simple form.

This information is required in order for us to be in compliance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which defines the procedures to handle such reports. Once we have received this notification from a family member, we will require the user to remove the infringing material.

Regards,
Annika
LiveJournal Abuse Prevention Team"

And apparently, he has apologied.

Let me know if I missed something.

Plain ETA: [info]viva_gloria is locking the post where boyan_fraser showed up, so his comments and responses to them can be viewed here:

boyan-fraser "explains".

Shiny examples include:

Hi. Yeah, I know you hate my guts and I'm the last person you probably
want to hear from right now, but before you spontaneously combust from
rage, can I just ask you one question: how can you presume that you
know who I am and who I was to * (aka Thamiris)? And if I'm just
a "thief" would I be so stupid to steal and post the stuff in a public
journal?

See, there is a perfectly logical explanation -- but why bother, when
you've already chose what you want to believe in? So it doesn't matter
what I have to say, when you don't want to listen, right?

Okay, you can now resume hating me.

And:

If there is a 'perfectly logical' explanation, then you should have
included it with every post. Otherwise--how are we supposed to know?

You weren't supposed to know. That was the idea. HER idea. And I've
already said too much.

I only uploaded the html-file, so it's very bare, but should be readable.

ETA: After managing to ignore it for hours and hours (*headdesk*), here's a link provided by [info]willow:

http://www.ljseek.com/users/boyan_fraser/

All boyan-fraser's LJ Seek-saved posts. The overall count is 107.

ETA: The "apology" is gone, but it can be read here. I also have a back-up copy saved.

ETA: I'm happy to announce that boyan-fraser has been SUSPENDED.

...I lack words. Seriously, I started to type 'asshat' and had to delete it because calling this guy that is an insult to asshats everywhere.

(I suppose it's possible that he's just your garden-variety plagiarist who just happened to claim the work of a well-loved writer as his own without knowing she's dead, but it's late and I miss her so my devil's advocacy is low.)

ETA while disconnected during mid-post:

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

It's not just the story. He's lifting all the public posts from her LJ. A la reposting Pepys' diary except for they've got his name on them and no credit to the source whatsoever, he's changing the gender and updating the fandoms to current ones, and Tham died LAST YEAR.

hers | his
hers | his

hers | his

WHAT?

That's unbelievable! Good thing I didn't send the abuse report yet, that needs to be included! I took a look at his LJ's front page and thought something was off but.. WTF?!

Yeah, essays, meta posts... and he's responding to the comments in his own LJ as if he wrote the originals.

In before finding out this really isn't a gay guy, either.

(OK, this could be a gay guy, but after all the relatively more innocent times a woman in fandom claimed to be one...)

I have honestly never seen anything like that before. Folks at LJ Abuse better react to this.

Wow that blows my mind. It's not bad enough to plagiarize her fiction, you have to plagiarize her life? Her journal?! What a scumbag!

Why the hell would anyone feel the need to plagiarize journal entries of all things?!

Plagiarizing the stories is low as it is, but that is unfuckingbelievable. To the pillory. *hefts basket of rotten vegetables*

Getting popular, I suppose.

Wow... I know that my own journal entries are mostly boring, but how can it feel good and flattering to have people comment on your wittingness and your good style of writing if you didn't actually write anything yourself?

Exactly. Besides, that person even pretty much copied the original poster's entry on how she had spent New Year's Day. NEW YEAR'S DAY. Copying that from someone else is just pathetic.

After my 'what the fuck!?', I just wanted to agree with you: I miss her terribly. And because she's gone, this is worse than your average plagiarism.

Argh.
