Yet another plagiarist
Small potatoes this time, but still requires mashing.

A plagiarist using the pseudonym "Alexaviera.J.Raven" posted a Highlander story to FFN. The story was a word-for-word copy of The Good Student by Sylvia Volk (one of the best-known stories in HL fanfiction). The story was reported to FFN Abuse, and has been deleted.

The plagiarist has other stories on FFN, all of them in the Buffy/Angel fandom. I strongly suspect that at least four of them are also plagiarized (Love Desire and the Law, Introductions, What If?, and Office Pleasures) because of the superior quality of the writing. Does anyone recognize these stories?

The plagiarist's FFN page is here.

ETA: The plagiarist responds. You can fill in the "Roommate Made Me Do It" square on your Plagiarism Bingo cards.

Huh. I picked a distinctive phrase and Googled it, and it looks like I randomly managed to pick one stolen sentence. The stories as a whole aren't similar, but:

From Love Desire and the Law:

She loved breathing, like she used to love her Manolo Blahnik pumps and her Prada handbag.

And from Forgiven:

Strong arms supported her as the images flashed away, leaving only the pain behind. She'd gotten used to that, to the support of the guys she loved like she loved breathing, like she used to love her Manolo Blahnik pumps and her Prada handbag.

ETA, trying again (sorry, got myself so confused):

Other chunks of the first chapter of Love Desire and the Law were taken from this chapter of Forgiven.

However, looks like the plagiarist has now removed the first chapter of Love Desire and the Law, and as far as I can tell, the remainder is her own bad porn. (She really has an idee fixe for Lindsey falling passionately in love with a female character [Cordelia or Lilah], he tenderly deflowers her, she bears his child and they live happily ever after.)

Introductions and Office Pleasures have both been bahleeted. I never got to check on them because FFN's servers were being robust, then I went out. They were gone when I got back. :(

Two of the above are giving "no such story" pages. I'm guessing someone's already reported them. :)

That's putting too much faith in the abuse team. More likely she deleted the ones that people specifically called her out on.

[shrugs] I dunno. I know that the last thing I reported (without reviewing) was deleted almost immediately; then again, this was sometime last year, so.

Well, the plagiarized first chapter of Love Desire and the Law has also been deleted but the rest of the fic is still up -- if it were the abuse team, I assume they'd just get rid of the whole thing. So I'm guessing that in this case, it's her doing the deleting.

Good point. Oh well. Not like I had much faith in ff.net anyway.

I still don't understand why people do this. o.0 It never fails to be found out eventually.

Probably hoping to pull a CC and be so popular by the time you're found out that the idiot masses don't care.

Misunderstanding

First of all Darlin I uploaded a story that a friend of mine named Amber asked me to for her she is my room mate, she had it written out in a notebook.I watched her type it out on my computer we share the computer. I did not know it was not her original work. I was lied to as well. I did not take credit for it as my own, i wrote a disclaimer stating it was a work done by my friend Amber.

I am not a plaugerist, I unwillingly ended up making a mistake. I am a good writer and I feel that it is for people to decide for themselves. I actually apreciate that we get the facts straight.. Again I illiterate I did not know and I apoligize to the original writer.

My stories are original they works from my soul I do not like being called a liar, i do not appreciate it in the least. I removed a few of my stories from Fanfiction.net due to language. Once i found out the error I removed it myself imediately. My room mate Amber and I are not talking because of this, she was in the wrong and I was in the wrong to allow it to be uploaded. I found the site that she must have gotten it from and I read the story, It was exact words, I feel like a fool and again I apoligize for the misunderstanding.

The other stories are mine, all of them and about 20 more I have yet to upload there. As it is right now I am not happy and I feel violated by my room mate and i know the writer felt violated by me, For that i also apoligize.

Hi, Alexaviera. This is Sylvia Volk, the writer in question.

Alas. I find I don't have enough vanity to believe that your roommate Amber loved my story so much that she copied the entire thing out in longhand, without a single mistake (it is a 16,000 word story) and then typed it into a computer for you to post on your ff.net account, again word-for-word, without a mistake. Nope. I don't believe in it.

But what I believe won't matter to you.

What ought to matter, though, is this: what you post to your pages and accounts - what you post on fanfiction.net and elsewhere - is your responsibility. You're responsible for it. You were indeed in the wrong, and in fact what you did was wrong, and that's the issue.

Don't do it again, because it's wrong. Thank you for apologizing; that was the right thing to do. And I also hope you've contacted Perri Smith, the author of Forgiven, and spoken to her about it; she'll tell you the same thing I'm telling you here. She also has a right to be informed about this whole controversy, if she doesn't already know about it.
