Terry Gilliam talks about the Good Omens movie
"I’m the only one who can make it, 'cos that's what Neil and Terry have said. I’m the only one", Gilliam told Empire in a recent interview, in which he also discusses the plan to finally finish Don Quixote. "I mean it’s such a wonderful book. And I think our script is pretty good, too. We did quite a few changes. We weren’t as respectful as we ought to have been. But Neil’s happy with it!"

Actually, this needs a more coherent reply.

I'm glad people are giving Terry G. something to do (the Tideland promotional tour was great, but it's rather sad how much of it was necessity instead of just for shits and giggles), but how much of this is actually going to happen? Gaiman and Pratchett have been talking about it for years now. It all sounds a bit too much like wishful thinking and lack of communication at this point.

Also, go buy Tideland, everyone. Terry G. needs your moneys. :D

Tideland was a very well-made film, but if I ever have to watch it again I will probably die. Especially any of the "silly kissers" bits, squick.

I was just trying to remember the title of "Tideland" today.

I don't have money right now but next time I do, I'll probably buy it.

The Dark Tower series is one I’ve always been afraid of being tainted.

That's why I am plugging my ears and going LALALALA! at the rumours I've heard that JJ Abrams might be involved in an adaptation.

As for Good Omens, I hope it gets made, if only for the casting wank that is sure to come.

I'm pretty sure that Stephen King himself mentioned it in a Con transcript that appeared in the back of one of the Dark Tower comics. Horrifying.

I didn't read the comics until they were out in the hardcover, so I missed that. Thank God. Almost makes it worth missing those short stories that were in the individual issues.

It was kind of interesting to learn a bit more about the mythology of the universe, but if I remember correctly, King didn't even write them himself, just had someone else do it, so they're kind of disappointing.

During an in-store Q&A Neil Gaiman said that if the movie ever does get made, he and Terry Pratchett will still be telling each other “It’ll never happen” on the red carpet at the premier.

Yeeeah, I still don't want Gilliam to touch Good Omens. Anyone who decides to cast Robin Williams as Aziraphale gets a thumbs down. Johnny Depp as Crowley, I am totally cool with. But Robin Williams? NO.

His 80s movies were excellent, but meh. I love Good Omens way, way too much. Plus, I still want to direct it.

Robin Williams as Azriphale? No.

Azriaphale needs to be very English, very educated, and very, very gay. I mean, he's supposed to be the gayest gay angel that ever nanced down the pike. Robin Williams is just a sugar rush. On the other hand, Ian McKellan wouldn't be a bad choice.

Johnny Depp as Crowley, however, is perfect.

My ideal Aziraphale is Paul Bettany, with his light and airy voice. Besides, Aziraphale is snarky, which I know Bettany can do. Ian McKellen would be great, if he wasn't a bit too old.

I actually pictured Johnny Depp when I was reading the book. Either Johnny Depp or Gary Oldman. Johnny Depp is almost ideal, because he has that whole, "Oh, man, I really got myself into this mess, didn't I?" demeanor.

I can't say that I pictured Johnny Depp, but he's about the only actor in the universe that could do justice to the role. I mean, who else could you see driving a burning frame of a Bentley from London to Tadfield?

I pictured Johnny Depp, because as soon as I read about Crowley having chiseled cheekbones, snakeskin boots, and wearing sunglasses "even when he dunt need to," I thought, "That has to be Johnny!"

And plus, the whole burning frame of a Bentley.

Throwing my vote in for Depp, and Bettany is a very good choice. Would Jack Davenport be way too good-looking to pull off Newt? I think he could manage the proper amount of dorky awkward needed.

*cackle* How about Frank Kelly (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111958/) as Shadwell?

Picked it up in high school. Something about short girls with frightening tempers, I think. Which is silly, since my patience is as long as US 40. Of course, even THAT has an end, so...

I would love Jack Davenport as Newt, but I think he'd be a bit too old, because isn't Newt, like, 21 or thereabouts? If there was someone like a youngish combination of Lee Pace and Jack Davenport, that would be almost ideal.

One of my friends loves Frank Kelly. I've never seen him in anything, so my initial reaction was Sean Connery or Brendan Gleeson. But Brendan Gleeson in Kingdom of Heaven more than Brendan Gleeson in Harry Potter, ahahah. (Also, Brendan Gleeson is younger than both of my parents!?)

I also love the idea of Eva Green for War. She makes my guy friends all lusty and you get the idea that she'd rather play with swords and knives than do much of anything else.

My boss just suggested Johnny Lee Miller for Aziraphale, and Mackenzie Crook for Newt. He's high on cold medication right now, so I won't hold it against him. XD
I don't know about Sean Connery. I don't think he could make that voice of his sound properly decrepit enough, and isn't Shadwell kind of short and bent over? But Gleeson could pull it off, and well.

Oo, Eva Green WOULD do very nicely, especially if they added a bit more red to her already lovely hair. Angie Everhart would be doable, too.
I thought about James Purefoy for Famine, but he just doesn't seem... pointy enough, you know?

I wouldn't mind Kenneth Branagh as Aziraphale, but Paul Bettany isn't bad either.

I would dearly love Laurence Fishburne to be the voice of Death, though.

Laurence Fishburne? Yes! He could do the speaking in all caps thing, no problem. Otherwise, the guy who did the voice of Death in the TV adaptation of "Hogfather." He had just the perfect combination of bafflement and stentorian DOOM.

You mean there's a person in this universe who actually prefers Meaning of Life to Holy Grail that is not me? Wow.

I do have to admit that Brazil is one of my all-time favorite scifi films, but the one problem with Gilliam is that he needs a little bit more "conciseness" to all of his movies. Like, Fear and Loathing and Brazil and Brothers Grimm and any of that could have done better with slicing off 15-30 minutes of them.

And I have a fear he'd do that to Good Omens, too.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]solle

Meaning Of Life is one of my top ten movies. I usually turn Holy Grail off after the first ten minutes unless I'm watching with friends. (I did travel to the UK to see Spamalot, but I didn't expect it to be better than Holy Grail... it wasn't better, but it was a lot more fun.) Brazil is definitely too long but brilliant, Fear & Loathing is perfect the way it is.

The thing is, I don't care one way or another about Good Omens. It was a decent book (if a bit messy), I like the fandom, but that's about it. I just think it's a terrible idea for Gilliam to direct the movie version. It's not what he's good at, and I'd feel horrible for those people who enjoyed the book more than I did if the end result is fucked.

The script is available online, and it's appallingly, get-drunk-before-reading-ly awful. It's some consolation that the chance of it ever getting made appears vanishingly small.
