We hardly knew ye, GJ.
GreatestJournal is going down.

So where to now, faceless bloggers?

Most of the GJ users are heading to Scribbld, or Insanejournal. I know some are trying to get to DJ, but thankfully, nobody has access to codes and they're unwilling to pay for an account, so DJ will continue to be left unmolested, much in the same with JF has been. As for the rest, they'll probably go back to their LJ accounts now that they've destoryed GJ.

For massive fucking lulz, may I suggest you read the latest post from system over on GJ. Cat macros, yelling, crying and capslock abound.

Good point. But DJ seems to experience the . . . scourge of the anonymous asstards more than JF does.

Unless I'm lucky/sheltered and I just haven't seen the worst of it.

Well, it's not currently dying under the bloating weight of fen who feel the need to keep a journal on every site, update it half a dozen times and flee back to LJ when the latest panic has died down.

And to be honest, I haven't seen much anonymous spam/asstards, but I've got the little boxes checked to repel spiders/bots and to keep from journal from being indexed by search engines. I had a friend who had forgotten to do that to her RPG journals and suddenly found herself flooded with spam/begging for invites until she turned it off.

I don't think InsaneJournal is dying.

And, I don't know. My view might be coloured, but then again every time I go over I tend to see the anonymous commenters behaving as if DJ is the journaling answer to 4chan. [shrugs] It might be just the places I visit, but who knows. I don't go there often enough to have a real say in whether or not DJ is omg totes molested.

No, but Commiejournal seems to be dealing badly with the influx. If Insanejournal can keep up, all the more power to them but I'm not holding my breath, especially with the influx of the RPGers + Russian LJers. Meanwhile, I'll continue to be bitter over the death of GJ, especially since my main journal's been there since it was named unlimitedrpgs.

It's probably where you're visiting then. I run a massive RPG over on DJ and rarely getting any comment spam/trolling on my journals. Just the occasional "can i has code?" and "JOIN MY COMM THAT WILL BE ABANDONED IN LIKE TWO WEEKS". DJ seems about as quiet as ever, to which I say, thank fucking god.

. . . Commiejournal is run by the absofuckinglutely insane Nebris, and has a number of problems that have nothing to do with the influx of fen.

Oh no, I'm quite aware that Nebris is completely fucking insane, but it doesn't change that she's dealing badly with the influx. From what I hear, journals are randomly and arbitrarily being deleted if you don't have all your information filled in/don't update often enough/etc etc.

I was under the impression that Nebris was male.

. . . yes, and that has very little to do with the influx of fen, and more to do with their shitty TOS.

I honestly have no idea what gender Nebris is. I default to female when talking in fandom circles.

The influx is what's leading to the pickiness, and I didn't notice many people complaining about their journals being deleted before the mass migration. Also, I wouldn't blame the Commiejournal troubles on fen, since it seems to be mostly RPGers and the Russian LJer who have been mentioning CJ's insane policies. I will continue to hold the fen responsible for the death of GJ and be glad that JF and DJ have code systems that have kept out the majority of people who only want to reserve their name on the slim chance that they may permanently move there one day.

Male. Which makes his . . . views all the stranger.

. . . to the best of my knowledge, their TOS had always included the line that they reserved the right to delete inactive journals at random. Since not many people were using CommieJournal before the influx, it makes sense that not many would complain that their journal had been deleted—the userbase just wasn't that large.

. . . I wouldn't hold the fen responsible for the death of greatestjournal, either. There were multiple ways the admins could have handled things; they chose an awful way to go about it.

Internet fen males are either completely normal or batshit insane. There's really not a lot of middle ground.

But if there was a smaller userbase, it also reasons to stand that they didn't have any reasons to delete inactive journals until there was an influx. Again, I know some people who moved over there, and I didn't see anyone complaining about the deletions until very recently (or unless you slighted Nebris, since I'd heard s/he didn't take criticism of any kind well).

I'll be honest, you probably can't sway me. I've watch GJ slowly die for the past eight months, watching the News comm be filled with bitchy self-entitled fen who threaten to take their 'business' elsewhere, who kept creating journals and comms and then bitching when a free always-slightly-shoddy-but-appreciated service was run straight into the ground thanks to the weight of people who had no intention of ever using GJ for a main journal. GJ was my calm quiet zen spot on the internet, I had my main journal based out of it for five years. And only in the past eight months, starting with Strikethroughgate, and ending with the panic resulting from the Russian buy-out, have I seen GJ slowly die.

Funny . . . the ones that I know have all been sane. And I wouldn't call Nebris fen so much as just . . . insane.

. . . the fact that there has to be the clause added of "unless you slighted Nebris" says a lot right there.

[shrugs] I would argue that it's been dying since December 2003, when LJ stopped requiring invite codes. But, okay.

I've seen both sane and insane ones. They're rare, but there. And the ones here on JF are all nice sensible guys.

... yeah, not really. You could make a case that in 2006 they started having troubles, particularly when they broke the code and couldn't purge deleted journals from the server anymore. But GJ was fine from 2003-5, and for a while had better service than LJ. Their phone posting worked fine, their icons were good, they had an image hosting service before LJ did, and private forums. They were an excellent journaling site for a very long time.

Those sound a bit like gilded memories. I had a GJ 03-05, and what I remember is amazing randomly disappearing icons and the servers being down more often than they were up.

There was one time when icons disappeared, right after they'd had massive problems with the server, and once in a while, GJ would take a million years to load, but it was hardly like they were down more than they were up. I'd heard people bitching about icons deleting themselves, but I honestly never say that happen to anyone else I knew on GJ unless they were near the 2000 icons limit.

GJ was never the greatest site on the internet, but it wasn't dying the moment it was born. Things only became catastrophic after 2006 when the really major code issues started popping up, stuff that could have been worked around if not for the influx of people, plus System's refusal to just let somebody else step in and help him.

IIRC, nebris does not qualify as fandom male. Because women being able to reproduce through some kind of brdge is not a fandom.

There was wank a few months ago involving CJ because they deleted journals that were not inactive. So it definitely hasn't only been since GJ died.

And GJ has been dying long before Strikethrough. That's why I've always tried telling others in my fandoms that it wasn't a solution to move to when it came to leaving LJ.

I don't think InsaneJournal is dying.

It's not. By a long shot. And one thing IJ has over other journaling sites is that the owner is extremely up-front about where things stand, and what solutions are being looked at when problems do arise. Check out one of the edits on the ClairvoyantWank post about GJ's demise -- which I knew would happen even back in '03, simply because the mysterious "System" kept telling users not to worry about how expensive all the bells and whistles are, that everything's taken care of, that it'll always be free, and relax, nothing to worry about.
