FYI on possible fandom scammer
Thought I'd post THIS here, since the asshat's apparently duped several fandoms, a reporter and Wal-Mart, for starters. The guys at professionalsoldiers did all the legwork.

Why the fuck would Gen. Petraeus send a letter of appreciation to actors, anyway?

SPN is the highest-requested dvd set in the middle east among the troops right now. Morale and all that.

I was wondering the same thing. Anyone in SPN know if that's true or not?

I don't know about SPN in particular, but horror DVDs are huge with the troops. The theory is it allows for socially-acceptable and controlled freakouts.

So, same reason everybody likes them, really.

That's what boggles me too. You'd think somewhere along the line he'd have made plans for, oh I don't know....a fort in another country to retreat to if the military ever got wind and decided to track him down?

Okay, first off, screw this guy.

Second off, wasn't there a wank a while back (been searching but can't find) about someone getting hacked off that they couldn't ask a question at a con because Dean and Sam were accepting medals from someone? Or has the Nutella gone to my brain?

It was a sidebar. The wanker was involved in one of the many bitchfests about the female cast members (or was it incest fic? It all starts to blur together after awhile), and someone here found her uber-pissy con post that (before we knew the soldier was a total con) made her look even more like a raging cunt.

Dude pretended to be US Special Forces and presented Supernatural stars with an "honorary Special Forces medal". Real SF finds out and is pissed that some asshole was impersonating them.

[info]velvet_mace

Wouldn't an honorary Special Forces metal have to be... you know... approved by someone fairly high up? Or do they give them out to kids at the fair.

And wow, how stupid would you have to be not to know the first rule of impersonating a heroic past is not to get your story in the news.

If it's just a medal, I assume one could have been found at a pawn shop or thrift store. I see medals there every so often, which always makes me a bit sad.

Yeah doesn't really mean that much if you buy it second hand like a collectable paperweight.

(Reply to this)(Parent)

[info]dunmurderin
2008-02-11 09:57 pm UTC (link)
What they recieved was a Special Forces coin, rather than a medal. A coin is a special, well, coin also known as a Challenge Coin. These coins are used in the military and in other organizations as a way of fostering unit morale and can vary in how commmon they are. A quick search under "Special Forces Challenge Coins" pulled up several websites that sell these coins to collectors (according to the Wikipedia article the coins do have some value to collectors). Generally, military collectors aren't out to committ fraud, but there are a lot of people out there who purchase collectables as a way of either inflating an existing military service record or to construct one out of whole cloth.

What helps guys like this to pass is that they tell their stories to people, generally civilians, who don't have any reason to suspect that they're lying. The people they tell their stories to either don't have any reason to check the facts or don't know enough to know that they're being bullshitted. Like any other scam, the facts don't start to come out

[info]smashingstars
2008-02-11 10:06 pm UTC (link)
Ah, I didn't realize it was a coin. I'd say most people wouldn't question the presentation of such a coin simply because it would never occur to them that a scammer would be giving something away. You always think of scammers taking, never just pretending to be something they're not.

I assume this guy hasn't accomplished much in his real life, so he has to pretend to be someone else who has. It's pitiful.

Either way... WTF. As punishment, they should make him actually go through the physical training required to be SF.

Hey wait a second, maybe I'm crazy but...

Wasn't there a side note in some Supernatural wank where one person on LJ was complaining that some "military guy" was taking up time with the actors during some convention or tour and giving them a special forces medal or something? Then a bunch of people came to her LJ and screamed at her for complaining?

A couple of weeks ago, my personal business site was DDOSed, costing me hundreds of dollars in bandwidth fees. I have also received numerous emails from members of your forum; threats of raping my family, exposing my bank account pin and social security number, and "goatseing" me. I traced the emails back to your members, and will take action immediately. Your IP addresses have been traced, and you will be reported to the authorities. If you think it's funny to ruin people's lives, just wait and see what will happen to yours. Do yourselves a favor and leave this site now, or you will pay the consequences.
