The estate of "Lord of the Rings" creator J.R.R. Tolkien is suing New Line Cinema, claiming the company failed to pay a cut of gross profits for the blockbuster films. Here is today's statement from The Tolkien Trust.

I just hope this doesn't translate as inspiration/encouragement in RDR's little personal bubble.

Knowing it's a film company and how rarely film companies pay out from the gross, they'll probably claim that they made no profit from the $6 billion.

I don't see it relating to the RDR/JKR battle, but that's just me.

Not just you. I can't see any relationship, even a tangential one.

That's the same thing New Line tried to do to Peter Jackson isn't it? What a bunch of crooks they are!

Sky News said that the estate wants about $150 million.

Maybe it's just me but $150m < $6b BY LIKE, A MILLION MILES. Is it really that much of a chunk of change, considering?

If they’ve massaged the gross profit by giving out large bonuses/fees to certain executives, maybe the shareholders (if they’re not the same people) might be very interested in this case as well. Who were the auditors? Could this turn out to another Arthur Anderson? I will gladly volunteer to audit the accounts (for a fee of course – got to get my snout in the trough as well).

The DHD headline for this was Worse News For New Line: Tolkien Sues.

My first thought: "Someone's written themselves into the new Hobbit movie?"

New Line is in danger of folding, so everyone is trying to get their share. Bob Shaye is being his usual asshole self, trying to delay the inevitable. They won't have a pot to piss in before too long.

Seriously? How did they manage that? I know they were always claiming to have put their company on the line by taking on this massive LOTR enterprise, but I would've thought they came out of that err... quite comfortably. How the hell did they fuck that up?

I seem to recall it has to do with The Golden Compass not turning out to be The Next LOTR.

What is it about media companies and their refusal to pay writers these days.

Tolkien wasn't a member of the WGA, donchaknow.
