Just...gobsmacked
I think this is the right place for this, it's not wank (and I can't link anyway), it's not a rant, it's more a wtf? about something in fandom. If it's not the right place, my apologies.

So I was checking my email yesterday and noticed a post on one of my lists labelled "for the easily squicked" or something of that nature (not word for word as it's on my home computer). So I read it, curious. It turned out to be a very huge, specific warning for...implied rimming.

My mouth's still hanging open. I admit to being, er, quite fond */understatement* of rimming, but I honestly would never, ever think of a warning if it was explicit, let alone implied. I would no more warn for rimming than I'd warn for cunnilingus or penetration or a blow job.

I'm wondering, though, are there people out there who are that squicked by rimming? I can think of many more sex activities I find much more likely to be squicky, personally, but I'm hardly the one to ask about finding rimming squicky. I even write it in het ;) though I have found I much prefer the guy being rimmed even there.

The only reason I can think of that people would squick more than for, say, a blowjob is that it's "dirty", and I don't mean that in any sort of moral sense, but in a "ew, shit comes out of there" sense.

I am not one of those people, rimming is a huge turn on for me, but I'm pretty sure that would be the reason.

Some people go a little overboard with the warnings, though. :p I wouldn't even consider rimming to be NC-17 (oral activities usually get an R from me), much less in need of a specific warning. O_o;;

i'm just curious--what distinguishes oral as less, uh, 'obscene'? not that obscene is bad. NOT AT ALL. I'm just wondering--is it the explicitness of the writing? like, if you write about someone coming all over someone's face, would that be NC17 versus a sort of "deep thrust i love you exploding flowers" intercourse scene could be R?

or is it in fact 3 AM? gaaaaaaaaaah.

*shrugs* Probably, but I don't write exploding flowers. :p I think if I did a huge, long extremely graphic oral-only scene, I would probably give it an NC-17. Sometimes it's just as the mood takes me. :p

Ratings are a funny thing. Any genital contact, be it only with hand, leads to me giving it at least R. The difference between R and NC-17 to me is how graphically the act is described. Meh.

I was talking to someone who was really really squicked by rimming recently -- a perfectly stable and sensible woman in her mid 30s who writes NC-17 fic. I think it is a shit thing.

luscious? Goodness.

You have picked a bad time to join the radioactive squirrel fandom -- we're in turmoil! It's all sagralisse's fault.

Thankyouthankyou. I'd like to thank the Soviet spy plane that dropped the plutonium for the squirrel to eat, all those years ago.

Considering how many fics I've read where a non-condomed penis is sucked after it's been up there...I wonder how valid that is.

But I sort of get it in that way. I'll never understand it, though.

*shrug* But actual scat squicks me so completely I almost couldn't type this line.

::meekly raises hand:: I'm squicked by rimming. I usually skim or skip those bits in a sex scene.

I don't expect a warning for it and I don't stop reading a story because of it (unless that's all the couple does in which case it quickly becomes boring anyway). I do get slightly irritated when people start acting as if something is wrong with a person who doesn't like it. Everyone has different tastes and psychoanalyzing them is really unnecessary and not very productive.

No need to be meek, I only bite if asked to first ;)

Seriously, it's not the people with your attitude I have a problem with at all, it's the ones who not only expect a warning, they bitch when they don't get it.

(generic you) You're an adult, on a list has adult topics? Grow up and take responsibility for your own reading habits. No one warned me about what happened to Beth in Little Women when I was twelve, and I coped.

In addition: I didn't intend to make it sound like I thought there was something wrong with being squicked by, well, anything. I don't think there is. But I just think that everything (even innoccuous g-rated gen) can offend someone so I think it's slightly...pointless to try to anticipate every squick... (the people the g-rated stuff probably offends would be hardcore slashers/shippers, I imagine, btw). But that's me...

Maybe not, but see a few of the comments above. Every time this type of discussion comes up (and it frequently does in one place or another, for one squick or another), the people who aren't squicked by whatever's being discussed start trying to figure out why others are, and nothing good ever comes out of that. What difference does it make? Somebody can write a 20 page thesis on why they think I don't like something (rimming, sibling or parent incest, lima beans, Avril Lavigne, whatever) and it won't change my opinion one bit, and frankly I don't see how it makes them feel any better either.

Ah, sorry. Hit a button there. Can you tell I've been in too many conversations with people saying "but why, why don't you like the same thing I do?" *g*

This issue is not really even about rimming, it's about warnings. And you know from being on FCA-L and other lists (I think you are anyway, maybe not) that's one discussion that'll never die. There will always be people who think there should be warnings for the tiniest details and others who are wholesale against all warnings period. And most of us will be hanging out somewhere in the middle pointing and laughing at the two extremes. Or getting frustrated at the two extremes, but pointing and laughing is better for the blood pressure. ;-)

Am personally EXTREMELY squicked by rimming, but I've got obsessive-compulsive disorder, so that's probably why...
