They made me an offer I can't understand...
So I got this email... probably because I belong to a few Yahoo Buffy fan groups... inviting me to join the "HavenMidWest group":

Dedicated to promoting unity and understanding of and among 'our kind'. Who is 'our kind'? Our Kind encompassess many walks... vampire/vampyre, otherkin, were, pagan, goth, donors/swans.

OK, guys... I like TV shows that feature vampires; don't really want to be one. And what 'n heck are donors and swans? It's one of those "I'm curious but afraid to ask" situations. Anyone out there recognize the term?

Apparently, they are vampire subculture terms.
http://www.house-eclipse.org/dictionary/d.shtml says:

Donor*(general, Sanguinarius, Sanguinarium)

1. (OSV and Sanguinarium) Someone who shares his or her blood or life energy, without obligation. Many donors enter into partnerships with vampires. These partnerships are often also sexual in nature, although they do not have to be. Many donors prefer to be monogamous, offering themselves to just one vampire at a time. Some donors will offer themselves to entire covens, provided their offerings are appreciated and not abused. Donors are cherished and protected by responsible vampires and are often given gifts in return for their services. They are honored affiliates of a House or coven. See also Source.
2. (Sanguinarius)Someone who gives or shares their blood or life-energy, without obligation. Many donors prefer to offer themselves to just one vampire, but some donors will offer of themselves to entire covens, provided their offerings are appreciated and not abused. (See also "source", "supplier")

Donor Swans: (formal, OSV)

In the OSV terminology, someone who shares thier blood or life energy without obligation. Many donors enter into partenrships with vampires. These partnerships may often be sexual in nature, although they do not have to be so. Many donors prefer to be monogamous, offering their gifts to just one vampire at a time. Some donors will offer themselves to an entire House or Order, provided that their offerings are appreciated and not abused. There are several types of donor swans in the OSV system including Crystal Swans (pranic or psi energy), Crimson Swans (Sanguine) and Amber Swans (Pranic and Sanguine). In the Eclipsan system, all nonvampiric allies of vampires are called Kithani and all donors given the title of M'kheru. (see also source or Kitra)

I don't know what "OSV" means.

"The newest venture to hit the scene is the Ordo Strigoii Vii (OSV), which is a dark spiritual pathway and Vampyric religion designed for the Vampyre subculture. The OSV is a recognized church in Amsterdam and is supported by the Church of Satan (CoS). (More information pending.)"

The OSV is a recognized church in Amsterdam and is supported by the Church of Satan (CoS).

At least it's not some illegitimate fringe sect.

I thought witches/wiccans were in covens, not vampires. Aren't they supposed to be solitary creatures or something?

Actual vampires - perhaps. People playing at being vampires - not so much.

Anne Rice vocab calls a group of vampires a coven.

I mean - the grand lord Lestat, who as we all know is real, proclaimed it to be such and we mere mortals are only following in the shadow of this great vampyre.

Or something.

BLACK SWAN:
A non-vampyre lover or friend who does not feel the draw to become sanguine, but who is nevertheless favorably inclined towards
Vampyres. they may or may not frequent vampyre nightclubs and usually understand the vampyre-fetish/ lifestyle.

WHITE SWAN:
Someone who cannot tolerate the Vampyre lifestyle and proves antagonistic to the scene. In general, White swans are still
a part of the gothic or fetish scene, which often brings them into contact with the vampyre community despite their disgust
at our ways.

DONORS
Without those who offer themselves body and soul to us, we would be nothing. We cannot be other than what we are, but it is the donors who sustain our nature. For this service, they should be respected. Never mistreat your donors, physically or emotionally. They are not to be manipulated or leeched off for more than what they freely offer. Never take them for granted. Appreciate them for the companionship and acceptance which they offer us, which so many others would refuse. Above all, appreciate the gift their life. That communion is sacred. Never fail to treat it as such.

And so on.

Damn, never thought I'd encounter a wuss vampire. I thought vampires just took what they wanted. "Don't mistreat your donor?" Christ.

I'm tempted to ask if this means they're not human, and therefore have no rights in the eyes of the law, which means they could be killed with impunity.

Because for me vampires = Things That Should Be Made to Stay Dead, not Rilly Rilly Cool.

I rather like the way the assassin character in Villains By Necessity phrased it.

"The living become dead -- that I'm used to. Not the other way around. I don't approve."

It's a very fun book by Eve Forward. Also sadly out of print, I believe. Sam, the assassin, is tied (amusingly enough, considering this wank) with Barbara Hambly's vampire character Simon Ysidro for favorite fantasy novel character ever.

People who spell it with a y (and other types) always make me wonder if they haven't actually done their research on the folklore of vampirism. Because there's no way in hell I think anyone would willingly donate their blood to someone who looked the equivilent of a half rotted corpse. :P Additionally before Anne Rice, vampires were a pretty damn grotesque type of creature.

But noooooo all vampyres are beautiful Ricean* men with flowing herbal essenced hair and thick european accents, who wear nothing but velvet.

*gags*

* of the Anne Rice Pretty Boi breed.

When Harker first sees Drac: "Within, stood a tall old man, clean shaven save for a long white moustache, and clad in black from head to foot, without a single speck of colour about him anywhere." Hardly studly. That's from the Project Gutenberg etext, which should be complete and unabridged.
