My hed is tilted slightly, yay?
This probably won't provoke much more than a few raised eyebrows, but I was looking at the Amazon entry for CC's new City of Ashes novel when I noticed something odd about the cover to a recommended book called Frostbite by Richelle Mead. From the summary and subtitle, Mead's book looks like it's about bunch of teenagers that attend a Hogwarts-like academy for vampires, but take a look at the book's cover here. Now compare that to the cover of the box set for Buffy the Vampire season 2 here. I realize that the two images aren't exactly the same, but given that Mead's book is about vampires, I think the similarities are close enough to have Mead's cover designer be invited to an intimate dinner-and-conversation with a clue-bat.

ETA: Fixed the title to be slightly more amusing.

You're not the only one. When I saw the cover, my immediate reaction was "...BUFFY?" It's a very distinctive headtilt!

I have a feeling that the only reason that the dude in the background isn't doing much more than looking like he's possessed by a particularly nasty strain of camera demon magic is because if any neck fondling would land the picture taker in the same circle of hell as child molesters and people who talk in the theater.

A Vampire Academy Novel? WTF, did one of the morons I RPed with actually go through with their intentions to write a book based on their crack RPG?

Why the hell would vampires need an academy?

Hey, being sexy, angsty bastards doesn't teach itself?

(About all I can remember is The Fifth Elephant, where Sybil Vimes mentions one of her old classmates was a werewolf, and she was sure that what happened to the ski instructor was an accident.)

Because the older ones started feeling embarrassed when it became obvious that the younger ones were born too young to fully appreciate Joss Whedon, and also believed that Bram Stoker was something that people kept in boiler rooms in the old days, which was a place where people exercised when they weren't feeding the giant pet salamander that lived in the fire. ;)

Vampires aren't angsty enough with the whole undead thing, they need high school drama too.

You could always ask the creator of Vampire Knight. Her vampires are hundreds of years old and attend a private school.

Made. Of. Fail.

I actually read a few chapters of the first book and apparently there are two kinds of vampires, vampires who age like mortal humans and the immortal kind... and the immortal kind are supposed to be more evil or something.

Yeah, unfortunate things happen when I'm bored and waiting around for someone at Barnes.

I noticed that book not too long ago and had the exact same thought. Probably because I watch too much Buffy. XD

...come on artist people. Do something a LITTLE different. Even the guy has the dark brooding thing going on. *sigh*

Well, I've seen a lot of vampire related themes, and oddly enough people are always tilting their heads and baring their necks to vampires.

I mean, that head tilt is pretty identical, but I've seen lots of other ones that are almost as close. It's just...vampires. Bared necks. They go together.

See, it's not just the head tilt that gets me--I was also bothered by their similar styles of hair. If the girl on the cover of Vampire Academy had anything other than blonde, short cropped hair, I would have agreed with you. I'm not complaining or blaming Mead for making her female protagonist have short cropped blonde hair, but her cover artist could have at least made a few changes to the cover picture to make the similarities between the two less obvious. For instance, she could have reversed the positions of the two characters, or had the girl looking into the other guy's eyes or lightly fingering his neck instead. :/ But like I said when I prefaced the post, it's nothing terribly important, just a small oddity mined from the dregs of the vast internets.

I don't know, I thought the whole vulnerable head-tilt, exposey-neck to mysterious hunk thing was connected with vampires long before Buffy ever existed.

Vampires are Buffy's fault. You can't have a cool title like 'vampire slayer' without some of these 'vampires', so she did what had to be done.
