Fanlib: not dead yet
So there's this YA series by Scott Westerfeld (Uglies Series). When I got to the third book (Specials) I found an ad at the end inviting readers to join Fanlib to read and write fanfics about the series. One one hand it's kind of nice to get explicit permission. On the other hand, well, Fanlib.

Has anyone seen this kind of ad in any other book?

(Randomly, here's a short Anonymous x Scientology fanfic I found. It amuses me.)

Nice to get explicit permission, yeah, but what I'd really like to know is whether that explicit permission is universal or extends only to posting fics at fanlib.

Maybe I'm overly suspicious or something, but my first question would be "Did anyone bother to solicit the author's opinion before they sold the ad space in the book to fanlib?" I mean, is it common practice that authors have a say regarding the kind of advertisement their publisher stick into their books?

I feel bad for Marcie in your icon. She keeps cracking and cracking but the egg KEEPS COMING BACK.

Oh, I wouldn't worry about that! She's approaching the task with such an earnestness, I doubt she will grow tired of cracking eggs anytime soon. I would be more worried about whoever is going to eat the soup of infinite eggs.

I have a vague recollection that Westerfeld did agree to team up with Fanlib. If that's the case, I lost a lot of respect for him.

Scott Westerfield blogged about it here if you're looking for more information.

It would certainly be an interesting thing to look into - especially for folks who (like me, I'll admit) try to stay within fandoms that're either public domain or that explicitly allow fanfiction.

Hmm. I haven't seen ads for Fanlib specifically, but I know that Cory Doctrow often has a habit of putting ads in his books for e-books of his work.

Then again, I'm probably comparing apples to oranges with that. Cory's idea is pretty cool while Scott's ad just sounds kind of creepy and skeevy for some reason.

I feel a little bad because my first reaction was: Does that mean there's more Tally/Shay out there than I thought?

Last I knew Fanlib didn't allow fics rated anything else but 'all' or '13+'. I'm not sure they think lesbians are '13+'.

Ah, I see. Shows you what I know about Fanlib.

I've been corrected. Apparently 17+ fics are hidden unless you're signed in and set the filter to see them. I guess that's alright.

FanLib allows adult content but hides 17+ unless you're logged in and you've set the filter to allow yourself to see it.

From FanLib's submission page:

FanLib.com Age Ratings

Use the Age Ratings to identify the kind of content contained in a submission. They can help you decide if a submission is suitable for viewing.

FanLib.com members can log in and adjust their account settings to determine which submissions they view and block based on the Age Ratings. Only members may view submissions rated 17+.

ALL
Submission suitable for everyone.

13+
Submission may not be suitable for visitors under the age of 13; May contain some mild sex and violence, but no graphic depictions, glamorized criminal behavior, or excessive profanity.

17+
Submission may not be suitable for visitors under the age of 17; May contain explicit depictions of sex and violence, intense situations, extreme behavior and profuse profanity. FanLib does not accept submissions with pornographic images, graphics or video.

In the back of an old copy of Callahan's Crosstime Saloon by Spider Robinson, there was a note from Robinson telling people about the alt.callahans newsgroup, and the IRC channel.

I still need to read that fourth book...

My only real comment on the Uglies stories at FanLib is that there's too many OCs and not enough Zane. Or hot lesbian action. Both are good.

I enjoyed the fourth book. There are things I'd critique about it but overall I thought it was good.

However I also enjoy Zane and hot lesbian action so maybe checking out FanLib isn't worth it.
