So:

Feel free to write fanfic.
Don't make money from it.
She'll never read it.

This is the best-case scenario for authors and fanfiction, as I see it.

Nice! It's good to see more writers coming out pro-fanfiction.

Libba rocks!!!

Now I just need to figure out where I put my copy of the third Gemma book so I can read it. It's here somewhere...

And now I know where Esme Squalor got her name.

I knew that one! But only because I read it online somewhere well after I'd started reading Lemony Snicket.

Same thing with all the dedications to Beatrice, I'd had no idea that was a reference until I saw a side conversation about Dante on FW once.

Did you know about Jerome already? For me, once I figured that one out, it was nothing to figure out Esme's name.

I ♥ Libbra Bray. She's so made of awesome. (And everyone should read her books, because they're like... A Victorian era version of The Craft. Only BETTER.)

She's awesome. She wins the Lee Goldberg Award For Allowing Fans Creative Expression. And I'm almost tempted to make one, send it to her, and mail him a picture of same. Not gonna, but still.

So how long before LG denounces her and fanfic?

He's late this year; he didn't do one during the February sweeps.

Book three is out? I don't remember anything about books one and two except that they involved someone's dead mom, India, a boarding school, absinthe, an alternate reality, and anagrams of "I AM LORD VOLDEMORT"-esque proportions, but I guess I know what I'll be reading over Easter break.

It's quite a capstone book, and I feel it make the whole trilogy. My feelings/memories were fairly similar to yours all this last year, and then I read the final book and it was very much "so this is why the other two books were so worth reading!" only not quite that, since I've always felt they were nice bubblegum books, better than most but not as dear to me as others.

At any rate, it's quite good.

That may be the best possible attitude an author could have towards fanworks. I think Libba Bray has just gained back a little of the respect she lost from me when she thanked Cassie Claire in the acknowledgments of her second book. Yes, I know how petty that is of me.

OMG, I saw that! I was wondering if it was the same CC...

She (LB) probably has little if any knowledge of the whole HP plagiarists bloohaha, or at least that was my rationale for forgiving her...

Don't feel bad, I had exactly the same reaction when I saw CC thanked in Ellen Kushner's latest book. It was all "OMG I love this book!!!" and then :'( How the hell does she weasel her way in with such excellent authors?

I think I love her even more now, if that's possible.

It's depressing that her books are so underrrated whereas crap like Twilight gets movie deals (sorry, but my friend's a big Twilight fangirl, I hate those books, and I just wanted an excuse to say something bitchy about them).

That's very similar to Jim Butcher's view - 'do what you want, just don't tell me about it or send it to me.'

Lee Goldberg, take note: This is how NOT to be a complete asshat.

Nice to see a published author with some perspective on this other than, "Everything I have written is too perfect for ANYONE ELSE to ever do my universe justice."

(Anne Rice, you should also be taking notes.)
