The life and death of Stefen Colbear
Upper Deck hired artist Todd Lockwood to create a card for the World of Warcraft TCG featuring the likeness of Stephen Colbert.

Unfortunately, Colbert's agent nipped the idea in the bud. According to Lockwood, he didn't even show the artwork to his client. D'oh!

He's a man of myth, legend, and internet memes -- a Paladin crusader for Truthiness, justice, and the Alliance way. His name is Stefen Colbear, and he's putting the Horde on notice. You can get the artwork in wallpaper and card forms.

Ah, so that's the origin of that image. Cool! :3 I saw it a while back floating around and grabbed a copy to admire/keep for later uses.

Tried playing the card game once... would rather just read the amusing cards and look at the pretty artwork...

Can this be another excuse to laugh at the uberserious WoW lolplayers who get all het up about people naming their toons something "un-fantasy" that "breaks immersion"? It's a video game with a fuckton of popculture references in it-- WHAT immersion?

That happens outside of RP servers who have a legitimate beef?

Mostly just on RP servers who do have a legitimate beef, but take it to interesting places sometimes-- I often wonder if they're just as irritated at Blizz for putting "Haris Pilton, Socialite" in Shatt as they are at gnomes who dare to be named something like "Nurufuzzy" because they think humor doesn't fit in WoW.

(Seen it on PVE servers sometimes too, but they're swimming against a tide there. I mean, Pat Robertson the Troll Priest is funny.)

See, the silly names don't bother me. The only time it pisses me off is when it's something like the one hunter in my (RP) server who has the oh-so-original name of 'Hunteer' or the rogues who name themselves 'Hidenstab'. It's like, you couldn't think of anything better? More original? Really? REALLY, really?

Not to mntion the gazillion variations of Legolas/Legolaz/whatever. (Then only one I actually liked was the female dwarf called Legolass. Hee.)

It bugs me when people call themselves things like 'iwantshoes' or 'eatmoarchikn'. Perhaps I'm too serious?

Eh, just split the names a bit differently in your head.

Ea T'moar and Iwan Thso Es wouldn't look to off in any B-fantasy book. Though I admit it's hard to do anything about Chikn. Maybe transcribe it to katakana

Aside from the fact that there's no katakana in WoW, the only thing I can really point out is there IS a naming policy and one of the conditions IS 'do not use phrases'. Another is not to use really popular game character names or celebrity names. I'd imagine the names they have have been acquired by permission, because I've heard of Blizzard being asked to remove elements of their games because the proprietary owner of the thing they're tributing says, 'no, go away'.

Ahaha, yeeeah, I'm one of those douchebags who doesn't care to think up original names. Named my tauren Appa and had a blood elf named Larxene for a while. *ashamed*

I'm surprised that the agent didn't at least check with him on it, since Colbert's such a huge geek that I'd have thought this would be the sort of thing that would thrill him.
