The "pre-bandom" bandom?
So a while back I saw an indie/emo band called Jimmy Eat World live, and my friend was hesitant to go with me because she dislikes the current lot of emo bands and their slash-prone bandoms. I convinced her Jimmy Eat World has no such fandom and we went and enjoyed ourselves a lot.

But now I got to thinking - I was never fanatic to surf message boards or livejournal communities. Does Jimmy Eat World have a fanfiction/slash writing fandom as well (like the more current emo bands like MCR and Fall Out Boy)?

I would guess no since they're so regular-looking, regular-seeming (no "stagegay" witnessed at the show I went to) and have hit their 30s by now. But the internets are a big big place - a quick Google/LJ search might not provide the whole answer. So if you have any info on this, let me know. I'm kind of sickly curious.

EDIT: I edited the title to be less misleading.

Y'know, I'm not having much/any luck finding anything. I checked LJ thoroughly, adultfanfiction.net's music board, did a google on literotica.com, and am heading to GAFF.

That probably means it's either ridiculously obscure or non-existant. I think music fandom's have mostly gone to that direction with the exception of some prominent ones after FFnet cut RPF off. That's the last place I remember reading bandfic of some bands I like.

Isn't "the original bandom" the Beatles?

Also, lol, Jimmy Eat World. I heard a lot of them when I still listened to the alternative radio station in high school.

Is there a Beatles slash fandom? It seems like there should be, really...

Oh lord, is there ever. And I suspect much of it is John/Paul.

Do J/P-centric stories get a side helping of G/R just so that nobody's left out, as I tend to see in media fandoms with a set main cast? (I'm not personally into RPF or bandom, so I don't know if that convention carries over.)

Hahahaha I love the "leftover" pairing cliche. It's the kinder, gentler "kill off the rival love interest."

Hmmmmmm.

You've got me on a whole huge metaphysical train of thought here, which I may post over in [info]fandom_discuss so as not to tie things up.

Oh, definitely, I should've used a better adjective, sorry. I basically meant to mean "the bandoms that existed before this recent bandom thing became hugely popular". Was tired when typing the post. [/excuses schmexcuses]

JEW (lolz acronym) is very lol indeed. My friend kept quoting their "emoest" lyrics to me and we had a giggle. They have great energy live, though, I adore them.

I lol at bandom. It's so silly.

Also, I'm seriously considering making an attempt at removing the pants from a bandom girl. Therefore, I'm not going to say anything bad about it.

Oh, I hear ya. On the other hand, both the first bad slash and the first good slash I ever read were in a bandom so I suppose I should also withold some judgment.

They had a big hit with "The Middle" and opened up for Green Day on the American Idiot tour. I don't think they have a slash fandom though.

I think most people in bandom like Jimmy Eat World (I mean, I do), but I wouldn't really count them under the "bandom" header. I think most people who are fans aren't necessarily slash-inclined, or at least not w/r/t this particular band. That might change soon, though, because they're touring with Paramore, who are on Fueled By Ramen, and there's where all the major slash-y action takes place.

(Paramore is so wanky, you guys. They kicked their guitarist out because he got married? I don't know. It's weird. They're apparently super-religious, too.)

First, WTF at Paramore.

Yeah, I can see that. There was none of that emo fangirl crowd at the gig that you see around town (at least in these parts of the world), wearing MCR badges and whatnot. Jimmy isn't very prone to that, I mean, the singer did take digs at the bassist and joked around with the drummer but they're over 30, they've been friends since kids, I can't really see them dryhumping each other on stage.

I think Nightwish could give them a run for their money (or the fans could, most definitely).

I didn't know either of those things about Paramore. Now I'm intrigued.

You know Emppu and Tuomas have something going on.

Although, according to one fanfic I've seen, so do Tarja and Tori Amos.

Well, even huge popularity doesn't necessarily equal a prominent slash writing fandom. And nah, JEW isn't really unknown, though they are past their biggest fame by now, I guess.

I'd be shocked if they didn't, somewhere. They seemed to be pretty big when I was back in college, circa 1999/2000.

Yeah, their 2001 hit album was how I got into them, too. But looks like nothing's turning up so I'm guessing if they have a fic writing bandom, it's incredibly obscure and tucked away somewhere safe.

A large chunk of bandom tends to mainly focus on bands under the Fueled by Ramen label and their hot emo friends, like My Chemical Romance and 30 Seconds to Mars... Since they generally seem to consider that the officially "bandom", now I'm wondering what the difference is between bandom and a fandom of a band.

I've never seen Jimmy Eat World fanfiction, but I'd be surprised if it didn't exist. It's not one of the main slash-tastic ones though.

Thanks, I didn't know that about current bandom - have some people on my flist who're into but they don't really explain it, they just fangirl and fic and whatnot.

(disclaimer: I have no idea if this will make any sense at all.)
I think the difference is that bandom focuses on a group of bands who are all somehow related. It's easier to say "bandom" than it is "Fall Out Boy/My Chem/Panic/etc etc etc fandom". I think if had been any other group of related bands, the term would have sprung up However, if it was just one band or artist that you're a fan of, there isn't really a point in coming up with a term just for it. I'm a huge Morrissey fan, and there a pretty active fandom. I mean, people make shitty fanart and manips (really shitty manips, all the fucking time, omg) and I know there's a bit of fanfic out there, but no one is going to claim Morrissey as part of bandom, because it's just kind of us hanging out by ourselves.

/thoughts on bandom, soz.
