Fandom no longer exists! Superficially, anyway.
SUP has edited which interests show up as 'most popular'.

Interests that won't show up no matter how popular they are? Fandom, fan fic, fanfic, fan fiction, porn, fanfiction, girls, boys, sex.

THE CAKE IS A LIE.

If this is more appropriate for [info]6a_cornfield, let me know and I'll move it. It's just that there doesn't seem to be wank about it yet, and I thought people might have fun figuring out what else isn't being counted.

Edit: A table of disappeared interests. "Faeries" has now disappeared as well -- thinly-veiled homophobia or a secret SUP hatred of fey creatures?

Current list of magically disappearing interests: Sex, Boys, Guys, Girls, Fanfiction, Yaoi, Hardcore, Porn, Bondage, Faeries, Pain, Depression, and Bisexuality.

Edit II: [info]luthe says that guys is back on the list.

Edit III: Filter has been removed! Cue discussion of whether or not it was a mistake as Marta claims, which is currently going on in this Fandom Lounge post.

Porn is there, it's just listed as 'internet'.

Hmm... I spy 'slash' on the list. I guess the KGB doesn't know what 'slash' is.

Well, instead of "most popular" it's now "most popular with SUP". Just a minor modification.

Five minutes detective work makes me say this is silly conspiracy theories.

Using LJ's search interest function I found:

Porn - 348 comms + 426 users = 774 total
Fanfiction - 372 comms + 461 users = 833 total
Boys - 372 comms + 442 comms = 814 total
Girls - 352 comms + 442 users = 794 total
Sex - 383 comms + 457 users = 840 total

All interests showed a spread of recently updated and unused comms, as is usual. The least popular interest listed on the most popular interests page was The Matrix, with 16658.

Conclusion? Interests like porn, fanfiction, sex etc aren't showing up on the most popular interest page because, uh, they aren't listed as interests often enough. ZOMG OPPRESHUN!

I went to the most popular page to verify that my guess about the interest they missed censoring was correct, and laughed when I saw it was. Which meant that I had to explain to my husband again what that term meant.

Now that's just... odd. I'm guessing it's so that potential advertisers don't look at the Popular Interests list and shrink back in horror, or say 'well, we've found that people who like fanfic don't buy our products', or... or something?

I can't get worked up about the statistics-fudging, but I'm curious what the point of it is.

Looking at that list makes me wonder if they're trying to present the LJ community as some MySpace, ripe for exploiting for profit userbase. Removing not just the not-family-friendly ones, but a lot of the ones that don't scream "YAY CONSUMERISM!"

This is fascinating! XD According to this, Johnny Depp is bigger than Jesus. And more people like eyeliner than eyes. And "drinking" and "driving" are equally popular. Disturbing.

I'm a little baffled that "silver" is on there, though. I mean, it makes nice jewelery, but...?

Archive.org has the popular interests list from March 14. Bisexuality was on the bottom on the list, right after the Matrix. Today the Matrix is on the bottom. Is it possible that it dropped off naturally?

14th's list also has the following interests in Russia: музыка, книги, психология, секс, компьютеры, интернет, море, друзья, фотография and любовь. With exception of секс (sex), all of them were G-rated interests and can still be used in the interest searches. None of them seem to be present in today's popular interests. Does anybody know how Russian LJ-users feel about this?

I just did a search. The lowest number on the "popular interests" list is 16658. "Fan fiction", one of the so-called 'censored interests' turns up 833 total. "Yaoi"? 786. "Porn"? 774. Depression turns up 813, bisexuality turns up 770.

Methinks these people should've checked the numbers before crying OPPRESHUN!!

My wanky thoughts, let me show you them!

-seems more like misrepresentation than censorship. After all, they're not telling people they can't have sex as an interest, they're just misrepresenting the numbers.

-maybe this could be a good thing, at least from the standpoint of groups like Warriors Who Have Too Much Time, as they won't see LJ as a horrible pit of vileness that needs cleaned?

anyway, in terms of things they could be doing, this is fairly low on my list of things that piss me off.
