Fandom no longer exists! Superficially, anyway.
SUP has edited which interests show up as 'most popular'.

Interests that won't show up no matter how popular they are? Fandom, fan fic, fanfic, fan fiction, porn, fanfiction, girls, boys, sex.

THE CAKE IS A LIE.

If this is more appropriate for [info]6a_cornfield, let me know and I'll move it. It's just that there doesn't seem to be wank about it yet, and I thought people might have fun figuring out what else isn't being counted.

Edit: A table of disappeared interests. "Faeries" has now disappeared as well -- thinly-veiled homophobia or a secret SUP hatred of fey creatures?

Current list of magically disappearing interests: Sex, Boys, Guys, Girls, Fanfiction, Yaoi, Hardcore, Porn, Bondage, Faeries, Pain, Depression, and Bisexuality.

Edit II: [info]luthe says that guys is back on the list.

Edit III: Filter has been removed! Cue discussion of whether or not it was a mistake as Marta claims, which is currently going on in this Fandom Lounge post.

Have you seen this in her post?

Technical note: Searches initiated by users never show more than 400-500 matches, because the search routine times out to avoid overloading the servers. The routine LJ runs daily to produce the popular interests page does not have a timeout, so it gives a true result. Unless it's censored.

When I searched for music, I get 448 users and 414 communities, but it's on top of the list with 1 702 903 matches

My bad, I forget to check for that. Oops.

So, is there any way of checking whether LJ really has been fiddling the figures, such as searching without the time-out? Hmm.

Perhaps with external search engines?

It does fall a chunk if you do it with interests only, but its still quite a lot:

Results 1 - 10 of about 124,000 from livejournal.com/interests for fanfiction. (0.27 seconds)

I thought it was just evidence of my desperate desire not to do any more writing :)

This isn't technically true either - the interest search only finds the 500 oldest journals or comms listing a particular interest; from those 500, deleted/purged/suspended journals are substracted. So, while it is true that the interest search isn't representative, that's not due to the fact that it times out, but to the fact that the database it uses is limited.
