LJ users are blackmailink us!
SUP ain't happy about the upcoming LJ boycott. (Happening March 21st. "No posts, no comments, no content.") Anyway...

Translated from the Russian: We'll show THEM!

"In this situation, where they attempt to blackmail and to intimidate us, threatening to destroy our business, there is a business-reason not to reward this behavior. This is not the simple reaction of being more resistant the more pressure is applied. The fact is that through history no successful enterprise runs by being subjugated by unfriendly forces. No change, even the most correct one, will not experience some resistance.

It would probably be best to reconsider the recent changes. But from our point of view it is now necessary to wait until after the boycott has faded. Let it pass and have the voices of protest fade. Then we can consider changing this policy."

ETA provided by Tunxeh: Evidently SUP had originally hired a prostitute to blackmail Brad. Talk about shady business. (Actual credibility pending.)

ETA II: Anti-semitism?!

I'm stuck at "there is a business-reason not to reward this behavior"

WTF are they talking about? Looking at your fuck up and reevaluating it because you've royally pissed off a majority of your customer base is NOT 'rewarding behavior', it's good business. When the customers tell you something is wrong, you don't turn up your nose and slap the customer in the face with a glove.

I thought they said they'd done research before they took over LJ? Apparently they missed the explosions for every time LJ fucked something up, huh?

Consider your customers to be the enemy and dig in your heels like a teenager who doesn't want to clean his room. Well done, SUP, you've mastered advanced business technique! That won't backfire on you at all.

Let's hope this asshole is a random staffer shooting his mouth off, not one of the people actually in charge. Otherwise... yeah, it may be time to give serious thought to leaving LJ.

To make the boycott effective...
[info]issendai
2008-03-19 05:56 am UTC (link)
Not posting or commenting isn't enough. If you want to hit them in the purse, you need to do something that will affect their Google ad revenue, and not posting ain't it. As long as there are posts on LJ, Google has enough content to serve ads; Google doesn't care if the content is old or new, as long as it's on the page and there are eyes on it. To boycott effectively, we need to:

1. Not click the ads. At all. Ever. And get the word out--most of us are savvy enough to recognize the ads for what they are, but there are enough naive users out there to make it worth SUP's while to serve ads.

2. Not go to any LJ pages that have ads for the whole of March 21st. A small subset of Google ads pay by the impression, not the click, so causing the ad to be loaded onto a page is enough to net SUP a little cash. (Given the abysmal click rates for social sites, SUP is probably getting an extra-heavy dose of pay-per-impression ads served to LJ.)

On one hand, I agree with them because people have a history of being asses to LJ over everything. On the other hand? They wouldn't be "rewarding" people by responding to this behavior, because this behavior should indicate to them that people are very upset.

I sent them some stern, no-nonsense criticism. Not expecting my one comment to accomplish anything major, but it can't hurt!

It seems that the translation is not exactly accurate: http://furiosity.livejournal.com/472399.html

I don't speak Russian so I can't say which verion is more accurate, but I agree with furiosity that cultural differences are something most people don't take into account (which is understandable). I don't want to elaborate on my thoughts on yaoi cultural differences, but I agree with those commenters who say that the interview (even in the supposedly incorrect translation) sounds way less offensive and contemptuous to people who are used to this mentality. Me, I just shrugged even at the first translation. Yeah, he's quite ignorant about LJ, but he didn't come off as an asshat.

if the comment about the prostitute is true (i agree, the credibility is very doubtful), it should be very easy to verify, since the commenter said that brad talked about it after the divorce.

i'm betting on "not".

and nossik wrote in his other journal (anton_nossik, not dolboeb) that his official title is "social media evangelist". i don't know what that actually translates to in normal business terms, but i almost peed my pants.

St. Valentine's Day is approaching. Most people will spend it in the old-fashioned way - romantic dinner, candles, maybe a movie. However, not many people can afford a romantic dinner in a restaurant. The solution is to create a romantic sensation in your own home. Cleaners Aldgate recommend you to clean it first. This way it will smell clean and fresh. Then you can add some scent by boiling cinnamon or placing small bowls full of water and a few drops of a favourite essential oil. If you do not have the time to clean, then just give a call to cleaners Camden Town.
