LJ users are blackmailink us!
SUP ain't happy about the upcoming LJ boycott. (Happening March 21st. "No posts, no comments, no content.") Anyway...

Translated from the Russian: We'll show THEM!

"In this situation, where they attempt to blackmail and to intimidate us, threatening to destroy our business, there is a business-reason not to reward this behavior. This is not the simple reaction of being more resistant the more pressure is applied. The fact is that through history no successful enterprise runs by being subjugated by unfriendly forces. No change, even the most correct one, will not experience some resistance.

It would probably be best to reconsider the recent changes. But from our point of view it is now necessary to wait until after the boycott has faded. Let it pass and have the voices of protest fade. Then we can consider changing this policy."

ETA provided by Tunxeh: Evidently SUP had originally hired a prostitute to blackmail Brad. Talk about shady business. (Actual credibility pending.)

ETA II: Anti-semitism?!

Then users were told, and I quote, "Even if you pay, you will receive NOTHING extra for it. Your money is a donation. Do you like the project? Donate!" Such a model was in place from 1999 to 2005.

Wait... what? You get extra icons, and joining without need of a code. And extra customization. As far back as 2003, IIRC, when I joined LJ. The hell is he talking about?

I doubt he did any kind of research into LJ, so not knowing that is just to be expected.

I was just about to comment on that. I must have imagined those extra icons and being able to post polls in... 2003(?)

For serious! I know I only paid for my account (either in late 2002 or early 2003) for the extra icons. O_o

I joined in early 2001, and even then paid users/early adopters had the privilege of being able to customise their HTML at the core level rather than using clunky overrides.

And I can't remember how many icons I was allowed to have before I got a paid account in '04, but I seem to remember that extra icons was also a paid account perk at least since '01.
