New Anne of Green Gables book stirs debate
To mark the centennial of Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 original novel, Penguin books commissioned Canadian author Budge Wilson of Nova Scotia - the province close to Prince Edward Island where Green Gables was situated - to write the new book, titled "Before Green Gables".

Montgomery's heirs authorized Penguin to produce the prequel, which is based on information about Anne from the 1908 novel.

Wilson, when first approached by Penguin, did not want to write the book. But after re-reading the Anne series she said she became totally bewitched by her character, much more so than she had been as a child.

"I am still vaguely troubled by the idea that L.M. Montgomery would perhaps not want this done," she said in an interview.

...Wilson, who has written 32 books, said she realized that when she embarked on the project "there would be a good chance I would be torn apart by the critics and the Anne lovers."

"A lot of people have told me they've done a lot of crying and I am delighted," Wilson said.

Hmm.

I used to love those books. :/ Unfortunately, as I got older, Anne became absolutely insufferable, and now I only really like the short books about other characters, or Rainbow Valley (not Rilla, because I disliked her too).

Was it Anne of the Island where she wrote letters to Gilbert that began with "Dearest and then more dear"? I'm pretty sure it was Anne of Ingleside where she went ballistic over Gilbert not paying enough attention to her green dress.

I read all of the Anne books, but Anne really drove me nuts past the second book.

I remember being annoyed that she had dreams of raven hair and being a proper lady, when I myself was a proud redhead with dreams of being the knight in shining armor.

It's sort of amazing how that happens, isn't it? I adored Anne as a teenager, but now... well. Insufferable is the best word.

I still hate the idea of someone else writing a prequel, though.

I read all eight books while I was still 12 years old, and will not touch them again until I'll be well prepared to be disappointed on something I once loved so much. I'm 24 and they're still gathering dust on my library.

If this is successful, I imagine we'll soon see "Coming Soon from Penguin Press: Before Anne."

It'll be terribly boring, but at least every last drop of blood will be wrung from the stone.

Isn't Anne of Green Gables in the public domain?

If so, it seems like the blessings of the Montgomery estate are hardly necessary. You'd have to avoid referencing events from books in the series that haven't passed in the public domain, and might run into trademark issues with your marketing, but it seems like any idiot could write and publish Anne of Green Gables, Episode I: The Phantom Gable.

The books may be in public domain, but her image is not. The general Anne of Green Gables copyright is owned jointly by the Province of Prince Edward Island and her heirs, says this site: http://www.trademarkblog.ca/social-networking-anne-of-green-gables/

That site links to a news story I had already heard about previously where an unauthorized website was using Anne's image without permission and the copyright holders got kind of pissed.

I loved Emily. She seemed so much more adventurous compared to Anne.

Now, it's been a few years since I've read Anne, but from what I remember her life before she got to Green Gables was uniformly grim and depressing. Wouldn't a whole book about that time be...well, grim and depressing? Does this sound like a page turner to anyone else?

There's a reason JKR started Harry Potter with him getting the letter from Hogwarts, after all. There just isn't as big a market for Harry Potter and the Years of Neglect.

Anne of the Island was my favourite of the series.

And I'm reading Emily of New Moon for the first time. I have a feeling I would have loved it a lot more had I started around 12 years old, or something, rather than 20.

I don't really get why this would be at all debated. I mean, Jane Austen is well-loved and there's a tonne of 'before' and 'after' books written for her stories. It's not like it's a new thing to do.

Mmmm, people keep on coming up with ideas to rape my childhood.

Or my early adolescence, in this case. Which is a time I cherish even more than my childhood, because it was all "YAYYYYY, WAOOOOW..."
