Don't tell the tinhats!
Sir Ian McKellen says he witnessed no evidence of gay Hobbits during the filming of LOTR.

"This gossip is all news to me. Elijah, Dominic and Orlando introduced me to their girlfriends during shooting. I didn't ever meet Viggo's partner although his son visited a a few times. It would seem that none of my friends can be accused of hypocrisy. Probably the fevered imagination of slashers is to blame. Hiding homosexuality is a long-tested shame in Hollywood and no doubt continues even in these days of gay marriage and gay civil partnerships. I agree that audiences are much less perturbed than producers allow, by a performer's sexuality. How else to explain the continuing popularity of George Michael, Elton John, Rupert Everett, Ellen de Generes and, excuse me, also the gay actor who played Gandalf?"

Pfft. He's obviously part of the anti-gay oppressive conspiracy to keep the closeted hobbits closet--oh WAIT....

Of course he *says* there were no homo-shenanigans, but look closely at the accompanying photo of Sir Ian. The hairs of his beard spell out "hobbits r gay."

I love him. I want to adopt him--maybe as my fabulous gay uncle, or something like that.

It was 'resolutely heterosexual', wasn't it? Waaaay more lovely McKellen-ish syllables.

I've been a fan of Ian McKellan ever since I saw him interviewed on the TODAY show and said that he amused himself when he was bored by getting a Gandalf Action figure and having it fight battles against his Mr. Magneto action figure.

So that's where Dennis Kelly got the idea from. (Yes, a play in which there were twin Ian McKellens, one the son of God, one the son of Satan, conducting a dastardly plan to rule the world, and represented...by action figures)

No, no! He just lied to help Dom and Elijah because their careers would be ruined if people knew they were gay, and/or because New Line executives forced him. But he was always careful to phrase his denials in a way that confirmed the relationship to the people who really knew what was going on. There's an ePost somewhere on the site where she actually asks Ian to confirm this, though she attempted to be subtle about it, and he smacked her down... something along the lines of "Perhaps I said they were resolutely heterosexual because they are actually resolutely heterosexual" (and I'm butchering the quote, I'm sure, it was, god. Four years ago at least). The tinhat response, of course, was along the lines, "He said 'perhaps'! OMG HE JUST OUTED THEM!"

Oh, that's right! And then people who knew/knew of McKellan said, "Wtf? He's like a big ol' Outing megaphone."

"he smacked her down... something along the lines of 'Perhaps I said they were resolutely heterosexual because they are actually resolutely heterosexual'"

That's brilliant. I love that man so much.

Well duh. Coming out, actively protesting and speaking out against section 28 and the like isn't real gay activism. Writing RPS and speculating about movie stars' love lives; THAT'S where the real fight for gay rights lies.
