final fantasy 3 for DS.
So I'm one of those retarded girl gamers who's only ever really finished Final Fantasy games and maybe one SNES game in my youth. Just as a sort of FYI if my questions sound dumb.

1) When reviews etc say 70 hours of gameplay, does that mean at its quickest, the game can be played within 70 hours or is that some sort of an average? I've taken several breaks where I've just been levelling up like crazy (aka done no advancing in the storyline) and I'm at 40 hours and I already feel like the game is ending soon.

2) Is it just me or do the Summons on this game suck ass? Everytime I do Ifrit** he just heals the party. WTF.

3) So the characters have no personalities to speak of, but I love me some good FF fic so if you have any FF3 fic recs, I'm all ears!

** Speaking of doing Ifrit, Ifrit/Shiva anybody? You know you want to!

I'm probably not the best person to answer this, since a) FF3 is my favourite Final Fantasy, and b) I've only ever played the NES version. If you like summons, though? Get Leviathan and Bahamut.

Also, where exactly in the story are you? The final dungeons are a goddamned bitch (at least they were in the NES game), so you're probably going to be stuck there for a while.

(I always make up names and personalities for my characters. Sometimes, I do voices.)

I'm at the place where Unei and Doga just sacrificed themselves to make for an Eureka Key and Syrcus Key or something .. and I'm supposed to go to Xande's tower (if the names don't ring a bell, they must've changed the names for DS version!).

At the beginning of the game I had a tingle that Refia/Luneth would be the het OTP and that I would slash Arc/Luneth but now they've just been Warriors of Light sans much personality touches. I'm kind of unused to it, having played mostly post-SNES FF's (though my 2nd favourite is FF4).

I have a habit of giving the main male characters female names and then writing sekrit-hidden-lesbian-love plots into the main storyline.

I'm worse off than you: I've never completed a final fantasy game. My boyfriend urged me to pick up FF4 since it's the basis for his FFRPG campaign, and I just can't get into it. I'm... in Fabul, I believe. I know I just got the awesome monk of awesome. Bards suck.

FF4 is a great game but I myself had to rely on a Walkthrough a couple of times when I was just so goddamn sick of not being sure where the hell to go and what the hell to do there. *fails'

Monks are hot. Bards are ..spoony.

The only one I can really answer in 2 (I think the 70 hours bit includes side-quests, though). Magic generally sucks, and summons are only really useful as a certain job (I think it's called summoner in this version. Regardless, it's the second job you get capable of using them). Other jobs get one of two effects, neither of which will be especially great.

Yeah, I only have Evoker available as a job thus far. Meh. I'm all for magic, though - I don't think I could live without a mage in a party. :D

If you do play FFIII, let me give you a warning. The last save point is nowhere near the final boss (as in hours away) and the final boss is a lot more powerful than the other dozen or so bosses you have to get through to get there. So if you die you have to go all the way back and defeat them all over again.

In short: FUCK YOU, FINAL BOSS!

I read somewhere that the original NES game had second save point in there and they took it out. WHAT THE FUCK. I enjoyed the game but that drove me freaking crazy.

I leveled up a lot and still didn't take anything like 70 hours to finish. I can't remember how many hours I did take, but not 70. I didn't get a heck of a lot use out of the summons, either.

(Ifrit/Shiva could be a great OTP. I've seen Yojimbo/Shiva in FFX but summon sex is sadly overlooked.)

I can only remember seeing a few ficlets, a couple of which were on a Final Fantasy kissing meme somewhere. I could try to look them up. And I saw a few on ff.net in their FFI - FFVI section.

(I like Ingus/Sara, Arc/Alus, and Cid/Mrs. Cid.)

I hated that part of the game. Not just because of the boss being hard part, but because the first couple times I tried to do the last bit, I would beat maybe one of the four guys you have to fight before the last boss and then my DS battery light would go red and the damn thing would die before I could even get to the last boss. (When I finally beat him it turned red after the third boss and I was terrified that it was going to die during the whole long "Yay you won the game" end segment and I'd have to do it all over again.)

For most games, when they say 70+ hours or whatever, it's usually slightly inflated to include the sidequests, grinding, watching every cutscene/summon spell every time, and so on.

Though sometimes, it actually turns out to be quite conservative. Like, say, how I have a save in FFXII that's at 118 hours and counting, when the game says it's around 60 or 70 hours to beat...

Wow, and my friend said she thought FFXII is short! I guess that means you could've beaten it hours ago but decided to get more out of it?

I decided to finish FFXII at around the 128 hour mark, and that was only because I didn't want the final battle to be like what I did in FFX. Yuna was stat-leveled up so much, she ran up and one-donked everything to death. Most anti-climactic thing ever.

But I was so sad FFXII was over. I wanted it to go on forever! And ever! And ever!

My favorite gameplay estimate was 48 hours for Disgaea.

Every gamer I knew that played it obsessed over leveling and items for at least 100 hours. I was trying to get my husband to do a challenge where he beat it in how much time the back actually estimated, but he never did.

Hours of gameplay typically includes the main story line, sidequests, and any gathering, as in "70 hours of gameplay to 100% completion". It depends on the publication, obviously, since most of them beef it up and make it sound like 70 hours is the main storyline and some actually give you the average completion time for what's only necessary to get to the end.

I actually just started playing this game. I spent a little while on it until I got bored and decided to try Harvest Moon for the first time. The graphics are pretty for the DS, but I hate that none of them have any personality. I kept hoping Arc would turn out to be a girl with short hair, kinda like Faris, but not even that happened :(

Yeah, they are sadly lacking in that area, and I gotta say, the gameplay is kind of dull, too. I mainly like it because it's a return to FF games for me after quite a while. Otherwise I might not be as keen.

1) Have no idea... I know it takes me a lot longer because I try (Try being the important word here.) to do everything in a game.

2) You definitely want a Summoner for summons.

3) Sorry haven't really looked for FF3 fic.

You mean there are people who don't ship Ifrit/Shiva? O.O?

I'm at the part where all I really have left to do are level up and, side quest. But I've been distracted by Crisis Core. I have a bad habit of doing that so it takes me forever to finish most games.

I'm a worse girl gamer - the only (standalone) games I've ever completed are a) Monkey Island, b) Carmageddon, c) Tomb Raider and d) Duke Nukem. Well, and The Patrician, but honestly...

On the other hand, I've *begun* Tomb Raider II, Psychonauts, Silent Hill 1 and 4 and a good half dozen other games, but never got farther than maybe two hours into it. Easily distracted is me.

1: I'd like to think it's an average. I finished Kingdom Hearts 2 about five hours short of what the box said, but right now I'm playing Persona 3 and I have almost 50 hours of gameplay and I'm not even halfway through the game.
