So, what do you sing to the Dalai Lama?
An international children's chorus chose "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life."

um...

Okay?

First thing: o_O

Second: A stupid move, but not really to do with fandom- maybe [info]random_lounge would be better.

Monty Python is suddenly not fandom?

*fails* And it's one of my favourite films too.

See, that's what I thought: it's this enourmous disconnect between the fannish and the unfannish that the song would be used for his holiness, and all that.

I've been picking it up mostly from KUOW; the song was performed at the Saturday gathering at Qwest field, and either every print reporter who was sent to cover it is too dumb to get why it was a surreal choice of music, or I'm just that bad at google.

Kuow.org may have a podcast of today's "the conversation" up tomorrow; they used a recording of the song as an outro before the half-hour break.

http://seedsofcompassion.org/webcast/index.html is the webcast of the event. I suspect it's somewhere in the two hours of footage of the "Compassion In Action" event, and I'm listening to the end (because that's an outro if every I've heard one, eh?) to see if I can find it.

This is almost as strange as American Express using "Gimme Some Money" by The Thamesmen (later and better known as Spinal Tap--you can put the umlaut on the 'n' there yourself) in a business-class credit card commercial. Almost.

Honestly? The vibe I get from the Dalai Lama, it strikes me that he probably laughed uproariously.

Oh, I have no doubt that it amused the hell out of him; I suspect, however, that it was not meant to be a moment of irony.

Have you seen Michael Palin's Himalaya? If I recall correctly, Palin is chilling in Dharamsala the day before he's to interview the Dalai Lama, when he (and we) hear someone calling him - "I know you from television! Monty Python!" and it's the Dalai Lama with his huge smile on his face.

Short answer: I agree!

Well, Buddhism is one of the few major religions on Earth with a laughing "god-figure" (pardon my ignorance, I'm not up on my comparitive theologies).

Well, not exactly god-figure as much as an a manifestation of an eschatological messiah-figure, but hey.

I totally read your subject to the tune of "What do you do with a drunken sailor." And then I was picturing a children's chorus singing /that/ to the Dalai Lama.

It's been a long day, apparently.

That is freaking hilarious. And I do tend to think the Dalai Lama got a laugh out of it.

Still... you do wonder what someone was thinking.

On an almost entirely unrelated note, I was once reading a Very Religious Jewish newspaper, with a target audience of people who don't watch TV or possibly even read ordinary newspapers. The article was about landscaping a park in Jerusalem and the title was "Bring Me a Shrubbery." My ex-husband and I were wondering and laughing for days.

I think "always look on the bright side of death" would be a terrific lyric for a Buddhist song. The "life's a piece of shit" part, though... not so much. Did they keep all the original lyrics?
