So there's this fandom I'm kind of in where the TV series has been over for years, but a new movie is being made, so of course the fandom is freaking out about what TPTB are going to do to their nice neat closed canon.

But I was discussing one possible worst case scenario, and it reminded me of something that happened in another fandom I was in, only I can't for the *life* of me remember which fandom. My sister thinks she remembers this happening too, so I have backup, but she can't pull out a name either.

The scenario: Canon closed with a strong implication of "happily ever after", or at least, of things going on as they were and the team/OTP/crew/whatever staying together and continuing to kick tail. Then, some time later, TPTB re-opened canon, and our characters had gone their separate ways and been out of touch for years, and had to be brought back together to start the new storyline. And the fandom in general, and me in particular, really, really, hated the whole idea. Only once I'd given it a chance, I realized I liked the way they did it and thought it was actually a good place to take the story.

This could have been in any genre, a TV show, book series, movies, anime or cartoons, comic, webcomic, *possibly* though unlikely a fanfic series; and with an online fandom, but possibly a very tiny one. The best I can narrow it down is that the new canon probably came out within the last five years or so.

We've come up with a few possibilities, but none of them fit quite right: Superman Returns (only I hadn't watched previous canon), the new TMNT movie (but my sister's never seen that one), the new Highlander movie (only it was completely irredeemable), the first Star Trek movie (too old), Sherlock Holmes (much, much too old)...

Anybody have any other ideas? Fandoms that did this that aren't the one I'm looking for are also welcome, for purposes of discussing how likely it is that this trope will lead to the new movie sucking.

I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but Futurama recently started putting out new stuff and they did it quite cleverly (IMO) while acknowledging the time between the last show and the new material.

Weiss Kreuz does that. First series ends with a hint that they have survived the finale, and are out kicking arse. There's a couple of radio plays that are often overlooked, in which the team gets angstier and angstier, and by the beginning of the second anime there's only one immediately obvious member of the original canon. Of course, Weiss Kreuz likes to wind fans up; at the end of the second series they kill a character, who is then just fine in the following manga.

Well, it's not exactly 'getting the band back together,' and certainly not a small fandom, but the Star Wars prequels? Lots of crushed expectations there.

I know there was a lot of grumbling in zines and such when LFL started authorizing novels about the original trilogy characters in the early 90's, but it's never been a really huge organized thing on the internet. (The first post-ROTJ novel came out in 1991 and the fandom was pretty small back then - at least compared to movie-era levels.)

Stargate SG1?

The last ep had them all stepping through the gate, then I presume they were separated since Carter went off to Atlantis. But I haven't seen any of the movies they've made/are making to see if the gang's all back together.

It wasn't the ghost busters movies was it? I seem to remember one of them starting with a character hunting down the other members.

Maybe Dukes of Hazzard? Ignore the new movie, but there were a couple made-for-TV movies with the old cast, where they split up and then came back (I think for Uncle Jessie's funeral, maybe Boss Hogg's, I'm not sure.) and they were all... completely different, but they slid right back into their old ways of yeehawing and jumping the car.

Voltron? The Lion version, anyway. I didn't really care for "Voltron: the 3rd dimension" though--the episodes were very irregular. And I don't know why they felt the need to make AU versions of the Lions (other than toy merchandising, anyway).

Man from UNCLE did that. The movie in the early 80s had Napoleon and Illya out of touch for years and Illya inexplicably becoming a fashion designer. To quote Wikipedia:

The movie briefly filled in the missing years. Thrush had been put out of business, and the remaining leader was in prison (his escape begins the story). Illya had quit UNCLE after a mission had gone sour and an innocent woman been killed, and now designed women's clothing at Vanya's in New York. Napoleon had been pushed out of UNCLE and now sold computers, though he still carried his UNCLE pen radio for sentimental reasons (which is how the organization is able to contact him after so many years).

Kind of textbook what you're asking for, though again, too old. And it wasn't quite a good place to take the story.

Ghostbusters.

Movie 1: Leaves off with victory against Gozer, the team are heroes, everything is spiffy, there's a parade.

Movie 2: Ghostbusters are split up, out of business, don't talk to each other, Ray's gotten even fatter, rest of the movie is bleak and depressing.
