OSC + SVA = OTP?
I did not see this anywhere, and I don't think there is specific wank attached to it, so here it is, in all of its glory:

Orson Scott Card weighs in on the SVA/JKR drama

Enjoy ... ?

(Courtesy of a mousie who IMd me the link!)

Edit: As [info]cleolinda pointed out, she mentioned this craziness here, when [info]waltraute supplied the link.  Sorry!

I get yelled at if I post Lexicon things on FW too frequently, so I'd tacked the OSC link onto the end of the last trial post.

The people who yell are spoilsports and you shouldn't listen to them unless they're mods. If this post hadn't been made, I wouldn't have seen all the post-Rice ETAs, and the same probably goes for a lot of other people, too.

Yeeeeah. None of JKR's critics in this thing seem to realize that the Lexicon is direct copypasta with almost no original content. Methinks that makes a slight bit of difference.

We're not talking about borrowed ideas here, we're talking about repackaging someone else's text.

To illustrate...

...she claims their 10,000-copy edition of The Harry Potter Lexicon, a book about Rowling's hugely successful novel series, is just a "rearrangement" of her own material.

Um, because it is?

Rowling "feels like her words were stolen," said lawyer Dan Shallman.
Well, heck, I feel like the plot of my novel Ender's Game was stolen by J.K. Rowling.

Her words. His plot. Does he not see the apples and oranges here? Come on, man.

Sorry for the additional self-replies, here, I have a bad habit of commenting before I've fully processed the topic. -_-

The difference between us is that I actually make enough money from Ender's Game to be content...

Jesus Christ, does he really think JKR hasn't made enough money off her books??? That this is just greed?? My eyes are seriously bugging out here. And holy crap, what a pretentious statement.

Orson Scott Card: Still a wanker.

Makes me happy every time I start thinking about reading his books, he says something crazy and scares me off. At least now I know that since it's the same thing as Harry Potter, I don't need to anyway!

I read a couple before I knew how batshit he was. They were actually pretty good, and some of his short stories are excellent IMO.

But his wackier public statments on more serious subjects have kept me from really wanting to get back into his stuff.

And this is pretty funny. It's got "I don't resent that I'm not as rich and famous as JKR, nope, not at all" written all over it.

I read the whole Ender's Game series before I knew he was such an ass. They really are good books, especially Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. And, basically every young adult fantasy/sci fi novel has that plot, so meh. If you can forget about his craziness, they are good reads. And, the library's a good place to get them if you don't wanna buy them/give money to him. (According to the article, he already has enough, anyway.)

The sad thing is that Ender's Game and some of his short stories are amazing (Unaccompanied Sonata makes me cry every time I read it) but Card himself is such an ass I can't make myself read anything of his that I hadn't already read before finding out what an ass he is. I can enjoy the stuff I'd already enjoyed but I know anything I read now will be colored by the fact that he's such a dick.

"A young kid growing up in an oppressive family situation suddenly learns that he is one of a special class of children with special abilities, who are to be educated in a remote training facility where student life is dominated by an intense game played by teams flying in midair, at which this kid turns out to be exceptionally talented and a natural leader. He trains other kids in unauthorized extra sessions, which enrages his enemies, who attack him with the intention of killing him; but he is protected by his loyal, brilliant friends and gains strength from the love of some of his family members. He is given special guidance by an older man of legendary accomplishments who previously kept the enemy at bay. He goes on to become the crucial figure in a struggle against an unseen enemy who threatens the whole world."

Card, please, most of that is in most fantasy novels. It's a trope, it's not you being ripped off.

And he goes on about having enough money too, making him about as wanky as the Steve defenders.

At least when Neil Gaiman weighed in on the situation, he was being reasonable in his disagreeing with Rowling stance.

And don't forget the lawsuit by Nancy K. Stouffer, the author of a book entitled The Legend of Rah and the Muggles, whose hero was named "Larry Potter."

At that time, Rowling's lawyers called Stouffer's claim "frivolous."

Did he miss the part where Stouffer was lying through her teeth? You know, that whole little detail where almost every similarity to Harry Potter was edited into the books a decade after they were printed, well after the HP books came out? Or does he just enjoy the added air of fail it gives him?

Orson Scott Card is a complete tool and a filthy hypocrite:

Question
How do you feel about your fans writing "fanfiction" using characters that are already established by you (e.g, Ender, Valetine, etc.)?

OSC Answers
I'm flattered; and then, if they try to publish it (including on the net) except in very restricted circumstances, I will sue, because if I do NOT act vigorously to protect my copyright, I will lose that copyright -- and that is the only inheritance I have to leave my family. So fan fiction, while flattering, is also an attack on my means of livelihood. It is also a poor substitute for the writers' inventing their own characters and situations. It does not help them as writers; it can easily harm me; and those who care about my stories and characters know that what I write is "real" and has authority, and what fans write is not and does not. So it's all pointless. I'd prefer simply to ignore it when it happens, but the way copyright law functions, I am told that I cannot ignore it. So there it is.

Shut up, OSC. Just shut up.
