Stephenie Meyer the New JKR?
NPR recently did a story about the hype around Stephenie Meyer, the author of Twilight, etc. No mention of Twilight Moms in this article, alas, but loads of teen girl squee, better-than-JKR comments, shipping, and our old favorite, the "My muse makes me hear voices! Which is not like schizophrenia at all!"

Oh, Twilight. You really are the new HP. Except for the fact that HP didn't need sex nearly as badly.

JKR is no brilliant author, but the idea that miss Sparkly Vampires is better hurts my soul. At least the HP books only had abusive relationships in the minds of the batshit fans.

And wasn't ALL ABOUT romance. Or even mostly about. Or close to about. Plot first, romance later, dammit!

Damn fangirls. ;)

The idea that the popularity of these two series is even comparable is... sort of crazy in and of itself.

Plus- yeah, crap.

It really isn't. The batshit insanity of the fandoms, however, is very comparable.

I've been avoiding Twilight, and just read a few snippets on buttfacemakani's journal and... oh my God... WHY is this popular again? Is it the whole "I want to be a perfect beautiful girl that a dark and mysterious godlike beautiful man falls in love with"? Just so... AWFUL...

I just mocked it in a comic, wondering if some of the crazier fans will take issue with it. So far the reactions have been pleasant. *L*

The vampire literally sparkle. I didn't believe it could possibly be literal until a friend posted actual scans to show me just how wrong I was.

Twilight is like the Torchwood of romance fanfic. You can't take it too seriously, and you can't expect it to be as good as the source material.

To me, the appeal is in the sappiness. It's like if you take all the sappy moments from good books and put them all together into a new book, and accidentally include some pages from action scenes, then you have Twilight. I don't like romance novels, but my favourite bits in books are invariably the sappy parts -- which is why I like romance fic.

Also, I think a lot of people realise that the books are not high literature, but they are inexplicably addicted anyway, and just don't care. I think Meyer writes well for what she's writing. I don't think it's brilliant and classic, but it's good pop romance/fantasy.

On sparkly vampires -- meh. I think it gets more flack than it deserves. Her vampires aren't the classic Dracula type, and I think her reinvention is interesting. She writes them as stone-like creatures, so the sparkles are a natural extension of that. If Meyer were writing traditional fantasy and focused more on the mechanics and implications of living stone, I think she'd get props for being creative and not relying on traditional vampire tropes.

The fandom, however, scares me more than LotRPS and HP fandom combined.

I found it hilarious that Makani posted about Twilight today while I've been reading it. I'm about 70 pages from the end and I've got to say, I'd be done already if an editor had been a bit tougher. There is so much *extra* that could have been cut to make a less winded story.

And Bella is such a Sue, a self-insert too. Plus her name? Bella Swan. *snerk*

And the dazzling and sparkling and heart-stopping kisses. (No, really.)

All in all, not a bad story for a first timer though I'd be less harsh if the author was younger.

I'm admittedly not the most computer-literate person in the world, but is there a way to enlarge the comic, or a larger version than the one on DA? Reading it is hurting my eyes almost as much as the actual Twilight would.

Sorry.

Schizophrenia: you keep saying that word, fanpoodles. I do not think it means what you think it means.

In re: yacking characters - in my opinion it's all in how the writer deals with it. There's the Anne Rice way (special-snowflake-licious, strident and wanky) and the Madeleine l'Engle way (low-key, in-stride and unwanky) - it looks like a case of the former for this run-around, alas!

I still stand by two opinions:
1) This is what Anita Blake would have been if it had been written for the underage.
2) Out of what I managed to force myself to read, the only character I don't want to beat until candy comes out is Jacob. And that's not even saying much.

It may just be me, but that excerpt from her new book seems a bit less urple than the excerpts I've seen of Twilight. Then again, maybe they just picked the least flowery bits for the excerpt to lull people into a false sense of security or something.

The thing that annoys me about Twilight is that from what I've heard, it sucks, and I'd like to make fun of it but I really can't be arsed with reading it to find out whether it does indeed suck as much as I get the impression it does.
