US network ABC has decided to press ahead with a full series of time-travel drama Life on Mars, which is being remade for American TV.

WTF, America. First Coupling, then Spaced, now LOM? I refuse to watch any American remake of a brilliant British show... except The Office, which was a fluke. :D

Yes, it will certainly extend beyond fail. But the majority of the country has never seen the UK version and the history of BBC shows being remade in the US and becoming hits (i.e. Sanford and Son, Three's Company, All in the Family, Dear John, QaF, The Office, etc) means TPTB will never, ever stop.

Seriously, all other countries Life on Mars has been sold to don't want to make their own version, so why does the US? Why not broadcast the British version? Yes, there are some very typically British things in there that you might miss or not understand if you're not British yourself, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the show, dammit.

The "why" of this remake baffles me (... can't we just get Region 1 DVDs instead?), but I do not hate it, really, and it could get its own legs under itself rather nicely if it tries (which ... I'm not seeing, what with hearing several lines from the original verbatim). I love the original, and in no way expect great things from this, but it could still be entertaining, if only for Colm Meaney playing yet another psychotic cop.

Which, really, is what's got me feeling sympathetic towards the show: I have an unreasonable amount of affection for that particular Irishman. I enjoy a good spot of Colm Meaney in my life now and then. Seeing him in movies just isn't enough.
