Your thoughts on yaoi. What are they?

No, seriously.

I run a panel at my local con about yaoi, not being a yaoi fan brat, being realistic about it, etc. Last years panels ran generally on the ideas in this essay to give you an idea. Pretty much regardless of if you like or dislike yaoi, I'd like to know in an in depth yaoi discussion what you'd wanna see brought up.

Also, if you have any resources for writing/rping/general knowledge in that area that I could give out links to, it'd be appreciated. Like, for example, I told everyone to go read some real gay fiction and erotica if they wanted realism, but I didn't have any links on hand for good examples, because all mine are actual books.

Here's a discussion topic I've always wanted to bring up in a panel (and probably will the next time I have the spare cash to go to a con):

'Complaining about the lack of realism regarding sex in yaoi is akin to complaining that the space ships in Star Wars shouldn't really go 'woosh!'. Discuss.'

Eh, this is more realism akin to "Don't use Whiskey for lube" then "Some real gay guys get off on body hair, where is the body hair in your sexy bishy smex?!"

I, um, might have written an essay on that. >.> <.<

I dunno, that actually provokes the major question for me about yaoi: "when did 'yaoi' become synonymous with 'unrealistic' in a way that slash isn't?" Sure, they're both basically escapist forms, but -- to borrow the terms of your analogy -- why is yaoi equivalent to space opera/Star Wars (i.e., limited to unrealistic or cliche elements and not to be taken seriously) when slash seems to be more like sci-fi (certainly capable of being unrealistic/cliche/silly, but with a wide range of tone and style)? Is this a reflection of the original Japanese yaoi standards, or is there something else going on?

(Sorry if this is an inane question, but I'm honestly curious.)

I want a panel about "Writing slash doesn't make you a gay rights/feminism activist. No, no it doesn't." But I don't think anyone would attend.

I don't generally think about it, because it's not something I'm terribly interested in.

That said, though, when I do think about it I'm usually mystified as to the why. I mean, it's not exactly something you watch to get aroused for, the way guys look at lesbians porning out.

There's only so much you can do with two men getting it on like rabbits, I think, so there's not much space for literary expression there, although I'm sure that what expression happens it certainly can be intense.

What's always fascinated me about as well is that it seems like the biggest demographic of the people who like this stuff... aren't homosexual men. They're women, both straight and gay -- I've known a lesbian who, it seemed at one point, was obsessed with mpreg, which made for hilarious and oftentimes puzzling journal-reading.

End of the day, though, whatever. I've got interests I'm sure not many people don't share, and it's not the end of the world if you don't share my interests, much as the world doesn't end if I tell you that I find your interest baffling or not something I like.

On one of those 'ask me to blog about something random' memes on eljay, someone asked me my thoughts on yaoi.

My response can be paraphrased as "I am fucking sick of high school boys. Where are my space operas, high fantasy, adventure stories, etc.?"

(Note: I have a decent bit of high fantasy yaoi but it pales in comparison to the amount of high school boys.)

I'd be interested in a sub-genre breakdown. Considering the amount of doujinshi and fanfic produced for series like Gundam Wing, I would expect more themed original yaoi manga instead of the never-ending parade of high school boys.

Also, and I kinda hate to say it but feel I should - there used to be and probably still is a site called 'Nifty' (nifty.org? - it was generally mirrored elsewhere) that was an archive of original amateur gay erotica. I don't think I've surfed it in years though and can't speak for the current content or quality.
