Have any authors around here tried this yet?
Scrivener:
http://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener.html

It's supposed to help people outline, draft, revise, etc. It sounds like something fic writers would find really keen. (I'm not using a Mac, so I can't try it right now, but I was wondering if anyone around here had tried it.)

I've tried it, and it's really helpful if you're using a lot of outside resources or you have multiple files for your own in-story resources, but if you don't, most of it is just clutter if you're writing. I've had people swear by it, though.

Oh, I should probably note that I was using Scrivener Gold, which apparently was the completely free predecessor to this. It might be different now.

I found it unweildy to use. I like having the ability to have notes at my beck and call and the search thingy but I'm not a fan of the interface.

I only used the trial though.

I'm using it for a multi-chaptered piece of writing right now; I like how it gives you a structure but found the footnote/annotation-function rather annoying (especially when you want to export the beast). I'll probably switch back to Lyx or some other LaTex processor (I also like Ulysses for more creative writing purposes).

I use a similar program called yWriter2 (which is now yWriter4.) Best part? It's free.

I'm using Jer's Novel Writer, which is nagware*. Mostly I like the ability to leave margin notes (which MS Word can do as well), and to divide up sections of text and be able to drag them around, but the export features need work, and a track changes feature might be nice. It also has note-taking functions, but I've only used them a bit.

But the price was right.

* Read: It's free and doesn't have any limitations but will bug you more and more often about buying a copy on start up.

I love that program. I use it for research papers since I'm not much of a fiction writer, but it's good for layout thoughts with a nice clean interface.

I have the latest version of Scrivener and I love it. It helps me keep all my various drafts and notes in one spot, the on-screen word count can be very useful and the Full Screen mode is great for helping me focus.

Oh. My. God. I would die without Scrivener.

Seriously, I adore the damn thing. I guess there are a few features it's missing (annotations would be nice, for example) but other than that... yeah. Yum.

I use it for both research papers and long fiction projects that require outlines or notes, and I couldn't do without it now. The search function alone is worth the cost when working with multi-chaptered works-in-progress or sheafs of research material.

I picked up the demo a couple of weeks ago and am really loving it so far. It's so organized!

Oh looks shiny, but alas.. no Mac. :( I'm using Rough Draft. It's free, simple enough because anything with too many windows and buttons confuses the hell out of me, yet nicely structured (it has a sidebar for making notes, and boy did that thing save my fics more than once, and it keeps the documents in tabs). And still working nicely, even if there haven't been any updates for three years.
