Party time in the Lounge!
Whenever the weather gets bad, people gather together and bring goodies and party, right? Like hurricane parties, or when folks were having barbeques on streetcorners with strangers when the northeastern coast of the US had that big power blackout or California had rolling blackouts the year before... even during the '80s we all knew that Y2K would be crazy, so we partied like it was 1999 before the world ended. Why don't we do the same while LJ is down?

Blackout party in the Lounge's comments threads here!

Bring some sort of virtual food and/or drink, and a link or two to a meta-discussion site, an art/fic/vid/screencap archive, or a recs site... completely independent of LJ. Raise a glass and toast amidst the blackness so we can all party our way through the dark time. Or at the very least work ourselves into a crushingly brutal virtual hangover. ;-)

Here's a start:
The Yuletide archive - obscure fandom fun!
The Slash Advent Calendar 2004 - multifandom stories and art
Secret Slasha - Buffy and Angelverse
BishonenInk's lovely Advent Calendar - stories and art
The Fanfiction Symposium - a collection of hundreds of essays about all sorts of fannish topics
The Foresmutters Project - an effort to make the earliest slash available online; check out the archive for early and epic K/S
Minotaur's Sex Tips for Slash Writers - everything you ever wanted to know, and which Minotaur's been asked
Killa's Historical Resources for Fanfic Writers - incredible and organized and did I mention incredible?
Publications by Henry Jenkins, the author of Textual Poachers: Television Fans and Participatory Culture
More photos from the French rugby calendar (whee, nekkid guys!)

Bring the serious, bring the silly, and for goodness sake, somebody needs to bring a virtual karaoke machine for after we all start to get tipsy enough to sing... and hey, I don't do chatrooms, but if anyone is good at that sort of thing and wants to start one up, put the info in the comments here.

Unless anyone wants to start DJing, I'm putting the virtual stereo on random shuffle. The virtual bar is open, ladies and gents. What's your poison? *raises a virtual appletini, half-empty already* Does anyone wandering around have some virtual roll-on glitter or glo-sticks? The place needs some atmosphere. And please, someone tell me they remembered to bring Doritos!

ooh yay! I'd DJ but Real!Me has to go off to an aunt's house later.

YAY for starting this!

Anyone got any links to useful/interesting sites (besides fandom)? Kinda like our own version of bored.com or del.icio.us. w00t :D

My Little Pony Episode Review Kinda funny.

Way back when, we came up with a bunch of new-age-y type mary sue names like Silver Ravenwolf that devolved quickly into Tungsten Weaselcow etc. Here are some animals that might correspond. Warning, lotsa pictures. For dial-up people might not be so good.

Also brings love and sushi.

I don't read romance novels, but I have fun reading the essays about them here. (Besides, half the time they're applicable to romance fic.)

Hurt me because it's centered around the Buffyverse's Kennedy, but The Dammed is actually a really great read. It started out as a fic, turned into a webcomic, and now it's kind of an illustrated novel. Redardless of the format, the writing is outstanding and ObliqueReference has a way of developing Kennedy into a likeable, maybe even loveable character.

Oh, and there's exploding stuff.

Webcomics I've been reading and re-reading today:

http://sexylosers.com - Adult rated, quite sick, but in a really funny way.
http://sinfest.net - You all know it. Loads of good stuff in the archives.
http://nuklearpower.com - 8 Bit Theatre starts with "this is funny if you like Final Fantasy videogames", but developes into a comedy that does not require RPG-geekdom. Check it out.

Also, I've been hugely into Bollywood films lately and since I'm too lazy to go rent some films at the moment, instead I'm spending time reading about the upcoming flicks at the Bollywhat forums: http://bollywhat.com/forum/

There IS a world outside LJ, yo! :D

And when I'm so bored none of these links in this post interest me, I shall simply LEAVE THE HOUSE.

I have been thinking about asking at LJ's ffrants for a while, but not really dared. So I'm throwing this out here, not really expecting answers, but ... a girl can hope.

Any good sites or any recs for actorslash which doesn't involve LotR (except David Wenham, because, um) and isn't an RPG?

I have been away from that sort of thing for far too long.

For those of you who, like me, have an obsessive need to bake when bored, here's some recipes:

Baklava
*I prefer to add a bit more honey and cook a bit longer to thicken the sauce. I'm also planning on trying implanting whole cloves in the top layer to make it stay still dammit next time I make it.

Peppermint Bark (based on Williams Sonoma's, and doesn't cost thirty freaking bucks)
1 package white chocolate chocolate chips (Note: Ghiradelli's makes the best chocolate chips)
1 package dark chocolate chocolate chips
1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
1 package candy canes/peppermint candies
1) Prepare a jelly roll pan by putting waxed paper over it.
2) Melt dark chocolate over a double boiler. After it's melted, add peppermint extract. Spread as evenly as possible onto waxed paper.
3) While layer cools, crush peppermint candies. If you couldn't get candy canes, this'll take a while. The amount is adjustable, depending on what you want, but I'd suggest crushing more than you think you'll need.
4) Melt white chocolate over double boiler. Spread over hardened dark chocolate. (Unless the dark chocolate is entirely hardened, you'll prbably end up mixing the two layers a bit. Oh well) Sprinkle peppermint on top. Slap your family's hands away from it until cool.

Lemon Meringue Pie

Almond Roca
1 lb butter
2 cups sugar
2 cups almonds
2 Hershey's chocolate bars

Melt butter over medium-high temperature. Add sugar. Cook about 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Add almonds. Spread into jelly roll pan. Break up Hershey's bars, and put it on top of the still hot sugar slurry. As they melt, spread them so they cover the top of the candy. Let cool.

Cheesecake
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to decide what to bake.
