MTV to remake The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Lou Adler, executive producer of the original film, is partnering with BermanBraun and Fox Television Studios on the new rendition.

Two-hour remake will use the original screenplay by Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien but may also include music not featured in the original.

Helmer and casting decisions have yet to be announced.

"I'd like to see it shown a year from this coming Halloween, but that's up to MTV," Adler said.

BermanBraun principal Gail Berman will exec produce the project along with partner Lloyd Braun. Berman has been attached to a "Rocky Horror" remake dating back to her tenure as Fox programming chief (Daily Variety, July 1, 2002).

Frank will be cast via reality show. He will be a lisping, mincing, limp-wristed queen who someone either during the pre-show interviews or in the actual movie itself will refer to as a "hot tranny mess." Tim Curry and/or Richard Burton will help judge the reality show, looking all the while as if they are dying inside. The charm will be sucke out of it so the Frank/Brad and Frank/Janet scenes stop being funny and suddenly give off the creepy mention of 'rape is hilarious.' And this, this is why I hate MTV.

I think the remake will benefit from airing on MTV. It will allow them to get a little edgier and more adult with the story - while not being gratuitous with that privilege, of course.

...wait, that was MTV's animated Spider-Man. Nevermind.

I try not to judge stuff like this before it's even made, but Rocky Horror does not need to be remade. It's fine as it is!

Wasn't there a rumor about this like... I don't know, seven years ago or something like that? It must have been around the time of the Broadway revival, or shortly thereafter, because I have a vague memory of some angry blog post where people were threatening to kill themselves if Daphne Rubin-Vega got cast as Magenta. It might not have been MTV doing it, but I kind of want to say it was!
