Salon on "Twilight"
Laura Miller takes on the Twilight phenomenon and its appeal. Overall a pretty good, succinct article. (It's Salon, so if you're not a subscriber, you'll have to sit through an ad.) The lettercol is worth reading too, and remarkably unwanky. Well, so far. (eta) although it contains a lot more stupid than I initially realized, good god. Unsurprisingly there's a definite thoughts-on-yaoi vibe to much of it, of course.

It's been translated into a bunch of languages, but I don't know how popular it actually is outside of North America. (Though the Japanese version has cute manga illustrations, and from my experiences as a shojou-obsessed 14-year old, I suspect it has the possibility to be very popular there.)

I'm in mainland Europe, and as far as I know, it's nowhere near as popular. When Potter came out, there was articles in newspapers and midnight openings for the English version (and I live in a country where English isn't an official language, which just goes to show how popular it was), but I haven't heard anything about Twilight like that. Maybe the movie will change things, but that also depends on what movies come out at the same time as Twilight.
