Must share story about Twilight party
So there was a "Breaking Dawn" party at the local bookstore last night. One of my kids went with some friends even though they don't read the books. They just wanted to watch the show (and win Twilight-branded Godiva chocolate bars for their outrageous outfits). The theme was "prom." At least one girl came as Bella in a wedding dress, and another cross-dressed as Edward for the same occasion.

It was also covered in the local paper. Best quote:

"I like that it was written by a mom, not a writer," Maggie.., 18, said through fake fangs. "It's the perfect book. It's what everyone wants — a model boyfriend who glows. It's relatable."

Once you are a mum, you can't be anything else!

"It's the perfect book. It's what everyone wants — a model boyfriend who glows. It's relatable."

I would have to disagree so very much!

I am imagining that you meant it was a boy who came as Edward in a wedding dress. Because that would have been *awesome*.

It's what everyone wants — a model boyfriend who glows. It's relatable

Is that what the kids are calling vibrators these days? Model boyfriends? Or is a glow-in-the-dark male Real Doll?

Because my boyfriend doesn't glow. And I think I'm happy about that.

"It's the perfect book. It's what everyone wants — a model boyfriend who glows. It's relatable."

Wrong on three counts.

I also went to a release party. There was a DJ and a floor full of teenaged girls in prom dresses doing something called the Cupid shuffle, as well as dancing to the Jonas Brothers.

Whatever, not a wholly lost night. I did get a copy of Watchmen along with many lulz.

Maybe it's just me, but if I did have a model boyfriend who glowed, I would be somewhat less "Take me now, you raging stallion of sparkle!" and somewhat more "Maybe you should get that looked at."

We had a bucket of girls in drag at ours. One girl in all white. Lots of attempts at vampire-chic. There were games. Really pathetic games. It's like the games were aimed at 10 year olds, and the average age was 15.

I never knew that what I really wanted was a sparkly boyfriend! No wonder I ditched my last girlfriend -- she just didn't glow enough.

Maybe if I'd knocked her up, she would've had that important mother-to-be glow...

Fucking All-Father protect me. I'm not sure whether to drive a nail through my eye to end the suffering of my poor brain or mock it mercilessly. Yeah, we can ~tell~ that it's not written by a writer you braindead little goober, because any writer worth their salt would be embarrassed as hell to have written it. Or at least to have written it under their own name.

I am clearly too cranky today to deal with Twilight idiots. I'll see myself out.

I broke down yesterday and started reading my copy of Twilight, and three chapters in, I've already come to realize that at 35, I'm at least twenty years too old for this shit. So far, this book makes the Sweet Valley High series I was obsessed with back in junior high read like high art in comparison.

Anyone know of any good, non-sparkly vampire series that isn't written by Anne Rice? I need something compelling to counteract this book.

The only thing I don't get in all this is why the girl thought it's cool that the books were written by a mom. I mean, aren't you supposed to find all things parental annoying and uncool at that age?

Of course, said mom is what, only a few years older than these girls, so maybe that has something to do with it.

OK, why did everyone else get all the fun parties? I got dragged to one with a fan, and it was ungodly boring (I'm in a pretty major city, too... we went to the Ala Moana Barnes and Noble in Honolulu, which you'd think would get a lot of traffic from tourists and locals). About 70 people showed up, most of whom were teen and pre-teen girls with their parents, and there was only one girl who seemed particularly excited and fangirly (and all she managed in the way of a costume was a homemade t-shirt). No one dressed up, except for a handful of t-shirts and a small group of girls whom I guess were in prom wear, although it reminded me more of stripper wear (is that really what girls are wearing to prom these days? Minidresses with fishnets?) There was an awful lot of sitting around, a raffle that came with the least amount of fanfare I'd ever seen, and the most anticlimactic midnight sale I thought possible.

Ahh, well, at least they were having a 40% off sale on DVDs, and I managed to nab S1 of House to complete my collection. So the evening wasn't a total waste, I guess.

No one so far has mentioned New Amsterdam! DAMN good book by Elizabeth Bear. Protagonist is a steampunk, vampiric bisexual Sherlock Holmes-figure in a world full of zeppelins.
And it's brilliant. No glurge. No "Oh, vampires are so sexy!" though really, he is. Just damn good writing.

... huh. I hope I'm not being wank-ish when I say that I'm kind of offended by most of that.

Oog, I'm almost ashamed of having a Vampira user-icon after all this. Almost.

So, where are all the links to the various sporkings? No bad fanfic book is complete without a good sporking.

Wait, wait, the vampire is radioactive? What? Why is he...glowing? Did he decide to suck on a Glow-worm doll or something?

Ah to be so young again as to want nothing more out of a man than some sparkly back lighting. 8D I miss those years.

...am I really the only one who thought she was screwing with whoever interviewed her? Would anyone who actually liked the books go for "a model boyfriend who glows" to describe it? Seriously?

I think I'm just going to pretend she was, whether it's true or not. It hurts my brain less that way.

It's what everyone wants — a model boyfriend who glows.

But . . . I thought that was only the female Cylons . . .
