Must share story about Twilight party
So there was a "Breaking Dawn" party at the local bookstore last night. One of my kids went with some friends even though they don't read the books. They just wanted to watch the show (and win Twilight-branded Godiva chocolate bars for their outrageous outfits). The theme was "prom." At least one girl came as Bella in a wedding dress, and another cross-dressed as Edward for the same occasion.

It was also covered in the local paper. Best quote:

"I like that it was written by a mom, not a writer," Maggie.., 18, said through fake fangs. "It's the perfect book. It's what everyone wants — a model boyfriend who glows. It's relatable."

I broke down yesterday and started reading my copy of Twilight, and three chapters in, I've already come to realize that at 35, I'm at least twenty years too old for this shit. So far, this book makes the Sweet Valley High series I was obsessed with back in junior high read like high art in comparison.

Anyone know of any good, non-sparkly vampire series that isn't written by Anne Rice? I need something compelling to counteract this book.

I second this request...

(And I'm so glad that when I was in high school, at least we read Anne Rice compared to this crap... heck, at least she was halfway decent and vaguely sane back then...)

I'm a big fan of Tanya Huff's books. Kim Harrison is also fun.

Sunshine by Robin McKinley, if you don't mind getting mad cravings for baked goods.

Peeps by Scott Westerfield if you like the sciencey disease type of explanations.

The Blood series by Tanya Huff isn't bad, but I wouldn't particularly recommend it either. It's kinda bleh to me.

Dead Until Darkness by whatshername is also kinda neutral to me. I think the first one was okay, but the rest of the series seems to kinda be following the path of all the other vampire series I've read - everyone wants to fuck the heroine. Which, eh.

...Does Carpe Jugulum by Terry Pratchett count as a vampire book? Because it's hilarious, but you'd probably have to read the rest of the witch subseries of the Discworld series to put it in context.

Anita Blake by Laurell K. Hamilton isn't bad if you stop before it goes all porny. I still think the Neanderthal vampire was awesome. I'd say stop at about or before Blue Moon, maybe? Some people would include Obsidian Butterfly, some wouldn't. It depends on how you view giving Edward a fiancee.

I'm not horribly into vampires though so you can probably find more elsewhere.

Illona Andrews has a fun take on vampires. Only two books thus far though. We'll see how it develops.

Not series, but I always reccommend Barbara Hambly's Those Who Hunt the Night.

Also, "The Silver Kiss" is teenie vampire stalker romance that doesn't suck.

The first couple of Charlaine Harris' are pretty good, but I understand they get tedious after that.

I, Vampire by Jody Scott is bizarre and psychelic and the main character has a time-travelling lesbian love affair with Virginia Woolf...

Did you figure out if Bella was supposed to be sympathetic or not? Because after three chapters, I still didn't know and was too busy going LOL VOLVO.

I'm fond of Christopher Moore's Bloodsucking Fiends, I haven't read the sequel yet though. It's light and humorous, and the characters are not annoying, and the vampires definitely do not sparkle in the sun.

P. N. Elrod's Vampire Files series can be kind of fun--vampire detective in 1930s Chicago. I will also second (or third, or whatever) the recs for Sunshine and Those Who Hunt the Night.

Oh man, I loved Sweet Valley!

Did you know that they did a vampire miniseries? It was after I'd stopped reading SVH, so I missed out on it, but it's recapped over at 1bruce1. If possible, it's even worse than Twilight. Which makes it glorious.

MaryJanice Davidson's Undead is a funny vampire chicklit series. It's very tongue-in-cheek. And there's The Ant, who's not a vampire, but completely hilarious. And the devil is such a cool female character. Not to mention Betsy Taylor. And Tina. Oh, Tina. She's probably my favorite Civil War vampire ever.

They don't sparkle, but wear awesome clothes and make-up. And they don't make me want to spork my eyes out. Nice plus, that. Kelley Armstrong's vampires are awesome, but you have to read the series since I don't think they have their own book just yet. Cassandra and Aaron are just added within the plot.

I recently became madly hooked on the 'Night Watch' series of books, by Sergei Lukyanenko. And yep, the books of the movie of the same name. I thought I wasn't going to like it because I'd seen the movie, but I'm halfway through the first and can't put it down. Vampires, general supernatural stuff, and Russia!

First, be aware that it is still a teen series and therefore has a certain quality to it, but the Night World series by LJ Smith is a good series and it's just being republished. LJ Smith actually has a couple vampire series, and is worth checking out.

I'll, um, nth Those Who Hunt the Night. Also, this might not be easy to find, but should you ever find Red Sonja #4: Endithor's Daughter, it's worth a read. I remember it having a very interesting take on how to fight a vampire.

I really enjoyed the Dracula Tape and The Holmes-Dracula File by Frank Saberhagen. Haven't read them in years, but it was a fun retelling of Dracula from his point of view. Plus, Sherlock Holmes.

Also, Sunshine by Robin McKinley can't be recommended highly enough.

It's not a series, but The Silver Kiss by Anette Curtis Klaus is really good. It's superficially similar to Twilight (vampire boy is attracted to human girl) but the end result is different and much better than Twilight.

I'll third or fourth the rec on the Blood series, although I actually thought her Smoke series was better. And another rec for...well, anything by Barbara Hambly, frankly.

I'd also recommend the Saint-Germain series by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, with several caveats. First, recognize that she writes the same book over and over. Second, stop after Tempting Fate. Srsly. Pretty much everything after that is crap, and Saint-Germain becomes unbearable. Third: she's anti-fanfiction. That may or may not bother you; it was the last straw for me with her, because lady, you're just not that good.
